Welcome to Pocket PC Addict sawhit6! There shouldn't be anything else you need to do to disable GPRS but you can go into the Comm Manager and disable data transfer there.
There is a WiFi icon at the top that tells you that you are connected, just tap on the little tower looking icon with arrows going back and forth.
thanks alot tim. Yeah i found the wifi icon on the phone and found out how to turn wifi on. Can you elaborate on turning data transfer off in the communications manager. Sorry for all the questions, but i'm a total newb when it comes to these phones.
one more question, when i go to the internet explorer and type in a website it says that it is connecting to a cellular line and that is has to dial a number. Is that what its supposed to do when its using wifi? it also says its connecting to my isp csd. what does this mean? thanks again
"To disable MediaNet on your Cingular 8125, just go to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections>Manage Existing Connections>the tap and hold the MediaNet connection and select delete. That should do the trick."
my problem is that I can get as far as the >Connections and then I don't get the option to "Manage Existing Connections" What am I missing?
hey guyz well i havea lil prob.. im trying to connect to wifi or anything that will let me get onto internet explorer i get on and trying to surf break.com and it tells me "the page cannot be displayed because the connection was lost please try again." any suggestions??
obxladybear, are you going to the connections icon after you hit the connections tab? once you do that it should go to a page that has manage existing connections
With respect to using WiFi instead of GPRS, I cancelled my GPRS service with TMobile, yet when I'm at home and open my browser, the PPC tries to open GPRS before trying WiFi ... I think I'm going to have to seriously consider deleting GPRS ....
Of course, if I remember to turn on the WiFi first, then there's no problem..
sawhit6, yes, I was using the connection icon within the connection tab.....I now find the "manage existing connections"....I click on it..get a My Isp screen....I have a choice of
Auto pick
My Isp CSD +14152441012
My ISP GPRS
when I select one of them, I get the option to edit...but not to delete it....how do I get rid of the media net...
when I try to connect to the wifi....the gprs always takes over...
Tim,
It seems that your the best one on here to ask. I'm a newb and I wanna know... Ok right now I have only Tmobile GPRS as my primary connection "programs that connect to the internet should use TMO GPRS. but for programs that connect to a private network should use.... I have TMO GPRS there too so when your on the CONNECTIONS page there`s only one showing...TMO GPRS. Do I need to setup the private network connection to use WIFI? because where I am I can connect to the FREE PUBLIC WIFI and that's security-unabled so it needs no passkey but when I was connected and went back to the browser an error messge said page not found. Please help me out step by step I would really appreciate it. THANX!
Hi everyone. This is my first time in this forum and I'm a new user of the Cingular 8125. I'm having the biggest porblem with it in regards to connecting to wifi. When I first got it, it worked fine and it picked up my wireless internet. But after a couple of days, it just died on me. Now my internet won't connect at all.
When I try connecting, it says cannot connect to current connection settings. I tried changing the settings but nothing seems to work. Can someone please help?
Earlier on in this post sadiq wrote: "for some reason, under work network, proxy settings said "this network connects to the internet." turned that off, and now it works like a charm." Try this and hopefully this works... and welcome to Pocket PC Addict Lnguyen1442! Glad to have you here!
ok i have a 8125 - i am trying to connect via WIFI to my school network.. i enable wifi - and it recognizes the two wireless networks we have here within a few seconds... then it asks for a log on username and password.. i log on and then i get a certificate error.. error states SERVER VALIDATION ERROR - The serv cert is issued by an unkown authority.. ANY ideas? thanks in advanced... ps i tried many of the steps above.. and still no help...
(i have bought 3 different ones, returned 2 of them, both platronics)
now i am using LOGITECH MOBILE EXPRESS (20$ on sale) bluetooth headset
i am still not able to connect, i did all the steps, on setting make sure it detect bluetooth. Did all instructions on the logitech menu to detech. still NOT found. phone , internet everythin else work perfectly except cant connect to bluetooth headset... is there a setting i have to change? i tried COM6 and COM7 even SECURE CONNECTION.
Tradesman (or anybody else), I've been trying for hours toying around with this thing and checking various forums, and just can't figure how to connect to my wifi.
I think I have nearly the same setup as you and I simply want to connect my Cingular 8125 to my home wifi, which is also a Netgear router.
Will try to email you as well. Thanks and sorry for the bother, but I'm about to give up and return this thing, because this is supposed to be a basic feature and it's proving not to be.
I'm trying real hard to follow but need some more hints:
- G and B enabled...not the Auto 108kb setting
OK, BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY "AUTO 108KB". IS THIS A SETTING SOMEWHERE I MISSED? MY NETGEAR IS 80211b, BUT WHO CARES, IT SUPPOSED TO WORK, RIGHT?
- Wep 128 not PSK
I ALSO HAVE WEP 128-BIT, BUT EVERYTIME I INPUT IT (VIA STYLUS ON THE SCREEN-KEYBOARD -- WHAT A PAIN!), I CANNOT CONNECT. THEN I GO BACK AND CHECK THE CONNECTION SETTINGS AND MY PASSWORD IS TRUNCATED TO MAYBE 8 ASTERISKS INSTEAD OF THE LONG STRING THAT WE NEED TO PUT IN WITH 128-BIT HEX, SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
ONLY ONCE I THINK IT ACTUALLY CHECKED. IT CAME BACK SAYING THE PASSWORD WAS WRONG, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE I HAVE ENTERED THE RIGHT PASSWORD, BUT IT JUST CAN'T GET TO THE INTERNET THRU MY ROUTER.
- adding a static IP for the MAC address of the device
SO HOW THE HECK DO YOU DO THIS? PLEASE GIVE ME REAL BASIC STEPS, SINCE THE NAVIGATION OF WINDOWS MOBILE FOR WIFI IS COUNTER-INTUITIVE.
- Hardware Version V3H1 HOW DO I CHECK THIS?
- Firmware Version V1.0.128_1.0.1 (latest) HOW DO I CHECK THIS? IF I DON'T HAVE THE LATEST, HOW DO I GET THIS VERSION?
- plus disabling the proxy HOW DO I DO THIS? CAN YOU GIVE ME REAL BASIC STEPS (TAP THIS, TAP THAT).
- I also called to tell Cingular to disable their services for the internet as i had no need to be charged. FOR NOW, I HAVE NOT EVEN BOTHERED TO TURN MY PHONE SERVICE ON, FOR THIS EXACT PURPOSE. I HAVE DELETED THE MEDIANET SETTING TOO AS SUGGESTED BY ANOTHER POST IN THIS THREAD. SO WIFI IS MY ONLY POSSIBILITY, YET I CANNOT CONNECT.
Other notes: There's like 7 wifi routers in my neighborhood and my 8125 keeps trying to connect to one of them, but not mine. Unfortunately that one needs a password, so I can't get thru to Internet. Matter of fact, if I try to surf, a screen comes up where I have to enter login, password, domain...don't know what the heck that is.
I don't have the IEEE security thing and it's not checked, so that can't be the culprit either (mentioned somewhere on this thread).
Quite frankly, this is totally absurd how difficult it is to get setup on wifi.
Just to get to the list of possible wifi connections, you have to go to Comm Manager -> Settings -> Wifi Settings -> Menu -> Network Cards. How stupid is that?
Sorry for my obvious tone of utter frustration and for the long post.
So anyways I've been working on this problem nonstop since my last post.
I think there may be a problem for anybody who has a static IP address as their account with their ISP.
This is because I have tried every possible option in Network Card settings. I am able to connect on someone else's wifi in my neighborhood, yet not my own. This is with as many variables eliminated, such as WEP key and Open authentication (no other option besides Open for the 8125).
I'm guessing that my neighbor probably has an ISP account which dynamically allocates IP addresses, which is the majority of accounts these days.
It also has nothing to do with any data plan, because I got this phone as an upgrade for my wife and have yet to activate service. Still, I have deleted the MediaNet settings, just in case.
Anybody have any suggestions? I've tried using a specific IP address according to all possible scenarios based on my Netgear 802.11b's settings, as well as that of my wifi-enabled laptop. I've filled in all fields and left some blank, the whole gamut. This includes the Name Servers tab too.
One thing very suspicious is when you go into the Name Servers tab after single-clicking on the SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter, it says "Name server addresses may be automatically assigned if DHCP is enabled on the adapter", yet there is no way to figure out if DHCP is enabled on the adapter! Btw, my Netgear says that DHCP is automatically assigned. I actually don't know what that means, but I tried all options anyways.
And via my neighbor's wifi connection, I have verified that PIE is a piece of crap because it only brings up wap-version sites. Opera Mini doesn't work, at least not the Lo-Memory version. So you pretty much have to buy Opera with the 8125.
Btw, I've had my DSL account for about 7 years and back then all they had were static IP accounts. If that ain't broke, I'm not gonna fix it.
Does anybody know if the hp iPaq has a more tweakable wireless adapter?
Meanwhile, I'll continue to dig on the web for answers and call HTC too.

Welcome to PCAddict !
Could you open a new thread with ;your bluetooth issue? It's certainly going to get lost within the WiFi discussion that's going on...
Hi, Superstatz! I'm sorry you are having issues with your WiFi connection...
I've been there, done that, and you sound like something is very, very wrong.
So, why don't you first try the obvious? Eliminate all security from your wireless router (turn off the desktop and laptop first, just in case...)
then try to connect your 8125 to the wireless router. It should connect freely... if it doesn't, either the router or your PPC has techical problems. If it does, then you can start adding the security one step at a time...
I have concluded the problem cannot be with security. Not only did I remove the WEP key, but also when I still had the WEP key and purposely tried to type in the wrong key just to see what would happen, Windows Mobile gave me a message saying that the key was wrong.
Evidently, the key gets passed from the router to the adapter without a hitch, but this is a separate issue than the adapter getting permission to access the Internet through the router.
So I would assume the key was right when I typed it in as best I could and got to see the adapter try to connect to my router, only to have it "X" out as "unavailable".
After searching through a few forums, I believe I have narrowed down the possibilities to:
1. An incompatibility issue with the 8125's built-in wifi adapter and the Netgear MR814v2 802.11b router. Someone posted on another forum (or maybe this one) to that effect. I'll try it out with a G router and report back. Also, the random neighbor whose wifi I could connect to was a G router as well. Nice little utility called Wi-Fi Companion, which I found on Handango, lets you know if you're accessing a B or G wifi.
2. Something's wrong with my adapter's ability to assign/accept (?) an IP and DNS. I found another good utility called vxIPConfig and it shows you the adapter's IP address, DHCP server, etc. Also shows MAC addr which Windows Mobile does not let you see. I'll try and see if my router can pickup based only on the MAC address.
3. Installation problem. I just got the device today. My Windows Mobile installation didn't exactly go so smoothly, but I didn't think anything of it until now. Will try a hard reset and start from scratch.
Wish me luck. If anyone has connected to a Netgear MR814v2 802.11b, let me know.
Hallelujah!!! After almost 48 hours of registry tweaks, searching forums and registry keys, it turned out that my router, a Netgear MR814 v2, had a newer firmware version.
Stupid of me not to try this first. Firmware release notes also mentioned a compatibility issue with Intel Centrino...should have guessed that it might be extended to other processors (I believe Cingular 8125 / HTC Wizards are powered by TI).
Well, I wasted maybe 24 man-hours of tests/tweaks, but I sure have learned a lot about the SDIO adapter's registry keys. If anyone needs to know what they do, let me know.
So if anyone is having problems connecting via wifi, and when you try to connect it seems like information is being passed (e.g., WEP security doesn't give you an error or it simply looks like it's about to connect but drops), then it might be a compatibility issue with your router.
Especially when you've tried almost every other option, such as filling in the IP address, DNS, etc. Good thing there are only so many options you can try on the adapter end of it.
Also helps if you can establish a connection with another router. Good thing I could connect to someone else's wifi in my neighborhood as a control case.
I've had my 8125 for about a week now, and have had very bad luck with my wifi. I've read all the diffent ideas around, and nothing seems to work. When I first got the phone, I could get a WIFI connection on my router, but only could get one page to load, then it would just say "locating" and then that the page wasn't found. Usually after a soft reset, it would start to work again, but I could at least hold a WIFI connection. Now, when I turn on my WIFI, the phone shows my connection in the 'network card' menu. It shows good signal, and it says 'available'. when i 'connect', it tries to connect then just goes back to available. I can't seem to figure out what is going on here. I also did a hard reset, and set up a 'home' connection and the same result. Any ideas. I really like this phone, and I would hate to have to get rid of it.
Thank you for your inpu below. I do have a question though..
1. When you delete media net, how can you intall it back when you need
it?
2. Is there a way of blocking GPRS/EDGE so that WIFI is the only option?
Thank you so much!

To answer your question the "E" icon on the top indicates that you are in an area where there is EDGE (or MediaNet service). If you see a G that means you are in an area that has GPRS service. GPRS is a bit slower than EDGE but it still is MediaNet. Most metropolitan areas have EDGE readily available.
