Weekly Tip: Move your ringtones to your memory card!

Time and time again I hear Pocket PC Phone Edition users wishing they could free up the main memory on their Pocket PC and still get their mp3 or wav ringtones to play. Here's a great tip that will allow you to move your ringtones to either a memory card or better yet iPAQ File Store (that's if you have an iPAQ). I recommend the latter because sometimes using an SD card doesn't get you as great results as something that is internal.

Remember to backup everything before you do this! Hacking into the registry can be very dangerous so do this at your own risk!

1. Get Resco Explorer 2005 so you can get access to the the Resco Registry Editor.

2. Open up the Resco Registry and navigate down the registry tree like so:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER>ControlPanel>SoundCategories>Rin gs

3. Once in that directory tap on the "Directory" string and under the "String" box put in something like this:

If you want to store your rings internally like I do:
\iPAQ File Store\Rings\

If you want to store your rings on an SD or miniSD card:
\SD Card\Rings\

4. Hit OK, then hit Yes to accept the modification of the value.
5. Open up Resco File Explorer and create a folder called Rings to put your mp3s or wavs into.
6. Once your ringtone is copied over, soft reset your Pocket PC Phone and you are good to g0!
7. Have someone call you and enjoy keeping your main memory ringtone free.

I have a cingular 8125, and I am using Total Commander to edit the registry. I have attempted to point the ringtones to the storage card with no success. "\\\registry\HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring" I then edit the string value and change it to "\Storage Card\Rings\". I already had a folder on the storage card named "Rings" with all of my mp3's, wav's, and wma's. I soft reset. Power on, and it Still points to the same location using the onboard memory. Any ideas?

Save your ringtones directly to the root of your storage card.

Without the registry. Open your Storage card using file Explorer and paste the ringtones.

Please, read this.

I'm very new to the pocket pc world and i just got this 8125 pocket pc 1 day before.... and want to use my own ring tone. To begin with what does storage card mean(is it the SD card). I can see my documents but not storage card there. Appreciate your guidance.

Thanks,
itsanu

First of all i would like to thank Tim for posting the information above. It will definately be very useful in the near future.

At the risk of sounding like a total newb (oh wait, I am)...I have a question kind of along the same lines as the subject matter of this thread. How do i remove a ringtone from the roster of available ringtones? I've had the phone for like 3 weeks and the first day I received it Im pretty sure I added and removed a few ringtones easily. Now that i go back to do it again..i am hopelessly stumped..

EDIT: FORGET THIS QUESTION.....I JUST FIGURED IT OUT..AND FREED UP SO MUCH MEMORY..

what didnt work setting it as a ringtone, just select it by holding down with your stylus a menu pops up at the bottom you will see an option set as ringtone. make sure its in the root of your storage card not in a file in your storage card.
