Don't Give Up on Pen Computing

When it comes to futuristic concepts, few ideas have captured the imagination like pen-based computing. The idea of doing away with a cumbersome keyboard for navigating and entering information has long been a Holy Grail, but it has met with little success. Microsoft's Tablet PC operating system has failed to take the world by storm, and lots of platforms -- from the Momenta PC to Pen Windows, and from the Newton to PalmPilots -- have come and gone while failing to shift the masses from their keyboards. Even PDAs and smart phones have shifted from being poster children for pen-based platforms to adopting tiny keyboards for text entry.

I look forward to the day when we not only can do away with our mini-keyboards, I look forward to a day when we can do away with our stylii. I am sure one day speech to text will be perfected to the point where it will be most efficient to simply "tell" your Pocket PC what to do instead of tap/typing it.
Your thoughts?

That will be a nightmare. Think of how annoyed you get with people on trains, cars and (this always raises the question - how big an a***hole are you?) at the front of a queue ignoring the person trying to serve them or just pointing at what they want. And you want to add people talking to their PDAs.
Another disadvantage is you'd issue a command by saying something like "<pda name> book appointment next Monday at 10am for 1 hour". Okay but what have you called your PDA? Would you like to say it in public?
However, you could decide quickly about the type of person - you'd avoid all meeting with people speaking to PDAs called Miss Moneypenny (Bond), Gort (The Day The Earth Stood Still) and MCP (Tron) and you'd keep dates with people talking to handcuffs, kinky or G&T.
