Controlling Media Player while using other apps

Here's the challenge: I have an Axim x50v, which is connected to my MS(Pharos) GPS receiver in my car, and while driving I have either Pocket Streets or GPSDash running on the console. I also have the Axim connected to my stereo to play tunes while I drive. I'd really like the D-Pad to work to control the Media Player without having to switch to Media Player and then back. This would be convenient, not to mention safer. I've tried voice command, which does part of the job, but is not 100% reliable, and I still have to poke a mapped button to activate the voice control. While in media player, I have volume up/down, next/previous control and play/pause all mapped to the d-pad.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!!!

Check the box in the button configuration menu that says "Do not upmap during backround play." Obviously you will not be able to use the d-pad for other applications though.

Thanks... but that option appears to have been removed in Media Player 10.
