I use an Ipaq 1940 and I'm curious about boosting the security on my device. Is it possible to force the rather over the top alphanumeric security login option to not demand upper and lowercase AND numerals in its password? Considering the 4 digit password is a doddle to crack (if you've got enough time and patience) surely I shouldn't be forced to have next to no security or mental security.
The reason for this, is the default keyboard layout makes entering numbers a tricky task and considering my PocketPC locks itself every hour is something that I'm forced to input many times a day.
Is there a registry tweak to allow me to input what I want as the password, rather than the OS insisting on my security measures?
So you don't like the strong alphanumeric settings?
There always seems to be a divide between security and comfort when it comes to such things...
What I'd be tempted to try is set the keyboard to "capitalize the first letter of a sentence" for your cap letter...then the number...you say the numbers are hard to use? How do you have the keyboard set? To large? That will move the numbers to a different screen. You might try the smaller keyboard for awhile...but these are just some untested ideas that occured to me this early.
It is entirely to do with comfort. I don't want to have to fiddle with tweaking the number panel on the default keyboard just to enter one number, when for the purposes that I need, a simple alphabetic password will suffice. There are many millions of variables with a alpha key of 7 letters or more, and only 10000 with a numeric 4 digit key.
I just want to stop some light fingered individual from gaining access to the data on my PPC, and I think that sort of password would suffice enough for a hard reset to be made should they be clued up enough.
To insist on a strong alphanumeric key when you can have such a light password option seems overkill to me. Even SplashID only has to have an alpha password.
Actually...I see what you mean about the small/large key option now. I can see the numerals now that I've switched it back to the default of small keys and if I use the up stroke for the capital instead of hitting shift, this is a decent timesaver.
Still not ideal, but a solution nonetheless.
Still interested if there is a registry hack solution though.
