Boston Pocket PC has dug up what looks to be an "Exellent-A-Mundo" way to mod a Class 1 Bluetooth Adapter for ranges that will make your jaw drop. There are apparently 2 versions of the directions. One in Popular Science Magazine. The other at bluedriving.com. They both require an additional antenna ($15) and intermediate soldering skills. "So I detached the stock antenna from a Linksys USBBT100 Class 1 USB Bluetooth adapter ($70; linksys.com) and replaced it with a larger HyperGain RE05U 2.4GHz antenna ($15; hyperlinktech.com). With that simple mod, I can make a Bluetooth connection up to a mile away—about 4,950 feet farther than most.."
It's funny, last night I was cleaning up my home office and found my old belkin BT adapter and was wondering what to do with it. I might just have to peel off the case and see if I can mod mine for that type of range.
