DVDs on PPC: Try Capturing instead of Ripping!

Divx advocates should simply move along... there's nothing here to see.
In preparation for an upcoming cross-country trip, I decided to rip some DVDs for playback on my iPAQ 2215 during the long flight. I wasn't looking forward to the tedious task of the ripping process however.
Something made me think of attaching my portable DVD player to my TV Tuner card and see if I could "record" a DVD. I hadn't tried it up until this point because the documentation on my IOMagic PVR card (TV tuner card) stated that the Composite and S-Video jacks were non-functional.
Well, I tried composite... and it worked. I tried S-Video, and it too worked. So just for the heckuvit, I fired up Windows Media Encoder and configured it to capture from my tuner card. Dang! it worked! I was able to record my DVD directly to wmv using the parameters from my encoding guide!
Now capture time is 1:1, and for those who care, it is a perfectly legal way to convert your DVDs for playback on PPC.
The resulting quality of the video was acceptable, and unless you have a high-end card, VBR will not be possible. I wouldn't recommend this technique for long-term, high quality archiving of DVDs.... but if you simply want to convert a movie for playback, this may just be the quickest and easiest ways to do it.
My IOMagic card is one of those cheapo $35 cards... smart shoppers can find tv cards for even less.
This technique can also be used for converting videotapes for playback as well.

Nifty outside-the-boxies! I don't have a capture card of my own now but will put this in the knowledge base / bottom drawer shoebox for future reference.
As a legal means of copying your DVDs for personal use, this is a keeper because storage sizes and media are certain to increase

Here's a few screencaps of playback in action:

It really doesn't get any easier than this.

With the settings I use, approx. 60 MB per hour of video. Creepshow is 2 hours and the file size is 124MB. Return of the Living Dead is 110 minutes and is 93MB. Video is extremely smooth and artifacts are kept to a minimum.

That is a great tip. Seems to me your encoding time would be reduced by a great deal too.

If you are talking about the new dawn of the living dead - my daughter was a model for the movie poster, trailor and beginning of the movie.

No we weren't... but good try in working that into the conversation!
But that is very cool. And a very unique experience.

Speaking of encoding. I've been capturing tv shows using Snapstream. I've tweaked the Pocket PC setting so it looks like a mini dvd on my dell. For some reason the show looks very crummy on the desktop, but awesome on the PPC.
Hey Sracer, you are much better at graphics than me. If you do a new thumbsup icon. I'll gladly swap it out!
