I have been using SOTI's Pocket Controller Professional for probably 2 years now. It is the "remote control" software that lets you control your Pocket PC from your desktop computer. I use it mainly for development, but here's a cool trick I thought up and started using recently. You can use it to optimize and position your WiFi router for better range or to cover those "dead spots" in your house or office.
Considering moving your router only a few feet can "optimize" it's location and provide better reception, it really doesn't take a lot of time or effort to increase your range. Heck by moving my router 3 feet, I was able to surf in a room that before wasn't accessible! Here's what you Do:
Get Pocket Controller running on your desktop and Pocket PC. Run a signal strength detector on your Pocket PC - Like WiFiFoFum freeware. If you are like me, you have your wifi router close to your PC. As such you'll be able to move and reposition your router without having to run to your Pocket PC with every adjustment. Simply look at the screen on your desktop PC and see what the signal strength is on your Pocket PC.
If you have a room or a location that you formerly couldn't reach, place your Pocket PC (running wififofum) near that location so that it's still connected. Then make your router adjustments until your signal peaks for the Pocket PC's current location. Then you can try moving the Pocket PC into the room or formerly dead location. If you are lucky like me, you'll now have use of that area.
