Handhelds vs. Laptops -- How to Lighten Your Load...

If you are one of the people who have found Pocket PC Addict because you are considering a Pocket PC purchase, then this Brighthand commentary might be a good place to start. It touches on how you can use your Pocket PC for nearly everything a laptop can do with a fraction of the physical weight.
It reminds me of when I used to travel all over the US doing my consulting, I had to carry one of the 7lb IBM Thinkpads with accessories. That thing would get so heavy after switching planes, etc. Now all of my critical data fits in a little device weighing ounces!
"I have to give a lot of credit to PDA and smartphone makers. Because their marketing folks and engineers have listened to the critics and customers and continuously improved their offerings, we have amazingly great technology choices these days. Oh, and some of the R&D folks are so clever they invented stuff we didn't even know we wanted. When you take a minute to look at your handheld or smartphone and consider all it can do, it's really amazing!
In the process of all this great progress a milestone has been reached that people, for various reasons, aren't yet willing or able to acknowledge. Handhelds can replace a laptop for many people who need a portable computer. I'd even venture to say that a large portion, if not a majority of laptop users, could use a PDA instead of a laptop. "

PPC's battery is short

The battery of ppc does not last very long (2+ hours), especially playing music or connecting internet. However, I do agree that ppc is lighter than laptop and ppc can be booted in no time. I also have a Sony Clie SJ30 that can last more than three hours whileI am continously playing "BeBejewled".

That's what I've been saying for a year! In fact, I was probably the first person saying that. The fact that few consumers are aware of the utility of PPCs shows how pathetic OEM advertising is.
I ranted about that earlier this week on LG.
I am not referring to the erroneous battery comment.

Dude you are so wrong!!!!!
I have an 'Old' Ipaq 3970 (released about July 02) and I still get at least 4-5 hours straight use out my baby (using databases, playing games/music, reading books, e-mails etc.) I went to Paris last xmas and my device kept me bumping and grinding all the way there and all the way back on Eurostar (and I live about 40 minutes way from waterloo station, the London terminal).
Granted connecting via bluetooth to the internet takes some juice, but I still get easily more than 3 hours usage (why would you want to spend 3+ hours on the internet while travelling anyway?). I also have a sleeve that accommodates an extended battery, which takes the usage up to 9-12 hours (of playing games, reading books, watching movies etc.)
If your only getting just over 3 hours out of your Sony Clie SJ30 (released about Sept 2002), I suggest you send it in for repairs as the battery is probably iffy and needs upgrading/tweaking.
or are you running any overclocking software/have the background light really cranked up and/or running lots of software at the same time?
Personally I'm looking forward to getting a new device (once all the reviews are out) that should extend the power usage up to at least 7 hours and that's without an additional battery.
Oh! and by the way I do carry my device around instead of a laptop. The only thing I miss is not being able to directly import/export files for reading on my device without having to install activestink (for conversion) on a pc first.

Battery extenders and replacement/larger high capacity batteries you can purchase really extend the battery life of these devices pretty darn far i think. The days of 2 hour battery life are pretty much gone.
