In an EWeek Commentary The Dark Side of Connectivity by Peter Coffee alludes to wireless devices being a bit "addictive" due to their constant need to be updated. He points to blogs as being "constantly updated" and some PDA functions losing their effectiveness when not connected. I suppose the nature of a site like PPCA would fall into this category too since it's updated several times a day. Well, at least we admit we have a problem since "Addict" is part of our name. "I used the phrase "almost addictive," but some mental health practitioners go further than that. James Fearing, at the National Counseling Center in Minneapolis, has proposed a list of symptoms for diagnosing computer addiction, including being unable to keep promises to oneself to reduce one's online time or feeling anxious or depressed when other activities interfere with computer access.
The three-part signature of addiction, observed psychologist Maressa Orzack in an article in Psychiatric Times, combines tolerance, withdrawal and compulsive use, all of which she has seen in many computer users. She prefers the label "impulse-control disorder" when substance abuse is not involved, but she observed that constant access to anonymous connections often reinforces other psychiatric or psychological problems."
So are you addicted? Do you have a "problem"? Discuss!!
It's been four days since the "diet coke incident" that destroyed my sync cradle... and let me tell you; I gots the no-connect DTs sumptin' bad.
Every time I fire up the e800 and look at Journal Bar and KabuToday, which are stuck endlessly scrolling data from June 12th as if they were caught in some gravitronic time-inhibited flux, I am racked with pain and remorse.
I am trying to hit up contacts both here in the Far East and back at home to... you know... get me a lil' something something. Man, I don't need a full docking station... just a sync cable... just something to tide me over until I can get back on a regular schedule.
I mean it's pathetic. I sit hunched in front of my laptop; trying to download Repligo files of websites (cause I can't use MobiPocket no more) or CAB files through the IR port. I mean, come on, how low rent is that?
kamikun,
Only 11 steps more to go now that you've admitted your problem.
Seriously, I've thought about this often as someone who spends my fair share of connected time. But you know what? I'm not spending time that I should be doing something else- I've leveraged the ability to connect from virtually anywhere so that a lot of the time spent online is time that would normally be wasted down time. So I don't have a problem. Ok, kamikun, you're a step ahead of me.
I do hate it when scare mongers try to latch onto something they probably aren't really involved it much.

kamikun,
Have you had no luck syncing your e800 with your laptop via IR? It should work just fine if you have activesync installed on the laptop.
At the risk of looking like a total tech loser... "Really?" I seriously did not know this. What are the basic steps for doing an IR ActiveSync? I thought IR was solely for transferring files!
UPDATE: duhh.. Cletus, dem's machine's got like ghosts in 'em or some such. 5 minutes of RTFHFing (reading the f***ing help file) gave me the info I needed. Sorry for being stupid. I'll try to not let it show so much in the future... Anyways, thanks for the whap with the clue bat. :?
