Engadget found a New York Times article linking to the homepage of "Dr. Mark Whittle, a professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia who has taken the cosmic background radiation of the universe and made a series of sounds." They then took the sound files in .WAV format and converted them into MP3 format(download link) for playing on iPods. Little did they know or suspect, we could play the same files on our Pocket PCs!
From Dr. Whittle's webpage: "Listen to the Big Bang !
This web material will improve over the next few weeks
Until then, follow my talk at the AAS meeting in Denver (6/1/04).
The talk contains sound (.wav) files and Quicktime movies (.mov).
Your computer must recognize these to play them.
Note also: small (laptop) computer speakers miss the deep tones."
What do you think of these sounds of the Universe?
