This might make an interesting discussion today. Accoring to an article over at Pynteronline (the site claiming "Everything You Need To Be A Better Journalist") Pocket PC doesn't have the same ROI for journalists that a Tablet PC with Microsoft's One Note or the Archos 380 will provide. There is even a comment from a BBC Washington correspondent(?) who says the Pocket PC OS is "maddening".
It's a quick read, so give it a once-over. Is the Pocket PC inferior for reporters? Can it not handle audio recording? Is the OS "maddening"? Let me know what you think!!!
One of our members on Tools is a photo-journalist in NYC who swears by his Toshiba e805. He is able to edit, email, or ftp his photos wirelessly from the street and says he now beats all his competitors in filing his photos with the newswire agencies.
He also told me he is the envy of all of his fellow journalists who are contending with lugging their laptops along with their other equipment to every site.
I think a good PPC with a portable keyboard is more than adequate for any journalist and certainly as capable as any laptop. Let's face it- a journalist in the street only needs a good word processor and the ability to edit and file their stories remotely.

I don't know about this. I've used my recorder several times on both of the pocket pcs I've owned with no issues. As a matter of fact, I've found the recorded sound to be quite astounding.
I'd be willing to bet that this is due to user error. A lot of people out there are lazy in that they won't take the time to learn the OS. It's similar to Windows on a desktop or laptop, but it is also different.
Adjustments to the quality of recorded sound can result in just that...different qualities in recorded sound. I'd bet these people who are complaining haven't even adjusted these settings.
Really the only issue I've ever had with the recording feature is accidently hitting the button and recording things I wasn't planning on. My new case from Sena helps me avoid this.
The OS isn't maddening...its different people.
People who don't take the time to learn how to properly master their devices are what is maddening.

hawkmant,
That's the first thing that stuck out to me about the article too is that the sound on PPC seems pretty darn good and it's very quick. I am using the Vito sound explorer on my ipaq and all I do is push a button twice and shove my PPC into the face of someone I'm talking to and there you have it - instant interview! (after I cut out the part where he/she slugs me)
It's not that hard and the recording is always clear 8-)
I think a tablet would be awesome for some uses like reporting... Totally different markets. I have played with tablets and really like them, except they do not have enought power to be my main computer and not small enough to carry around... but for a reporter or doctor I can see the fit.
Not all PPC has clear recordings. In my experience, devices made by HTC (most iPAQs) normally have pretty good audio (no matter input or output) quality. But I also experienced a shipping Toshiba (can't remember the model number) with an obvious hiss sound in the background of the recording. It's really up to the audio engineers of the ODM manufacturers...
Jeez! PPC Journalist 8-) now there's a job. So how do ya get to be one of these?
I would have more than a legitimate reason to tinker with my device if I could get on a bandwagon like that .
Imagine: tinker, tinker..... get paid........ travel, tinker, tinker...... get paid somemore.
Or am I showing my gross ignorance....... again! :?

It takes a lot of training and education to know how to ask:
"In the midst of this horrible personal tragedy- how do you feel right now?"
Just kidding, don't flame me.

My two nieces must've had a whole heap of training then, as they appear to have a PHD in asking for stuff.
I've downloaded Mnotes which I think can records voice notes (I wasn't entirely awake when I downloaded it, it just looke good ).
My intention was to record meetings so I could have a nice sleep during the meeting and catch up later. But I keep falling asleep too quickly .
By the way just to bare my ignorance even further (It's almost unfathomable), I presumed PPC journalist to be someone who wrote about ONLY PPC's. Not journalist's who just use a PPC to write their articles. Doh!
