A post over at thewirelessweblog indicates that soon we aren't going to have to search far and wide for our Wi-Fi access points. Instead, within 2 years up to 50% of all businesses will use WiFi as a replacement for 10-base T cables. "Peter Vicars, CEO of Waltham, Mass.-based Chantry Networks Inc., and one of the panelists last week at Networld+Interop 2004 agreed that ubiquitous Wi-Fi coverage was likely to happen in the near future. Children today are growing up with wireless access in their schools. Now that they are coming to expect that kind of constant connectivity, he said, the market is likely to deliver it."
Jeez, wifi everywhere would be great! But alas I suspect the UK will still be struggling with the less finer points of bluetooth. It's bad enough trying to find a wifi cafe, let alone free wifi.
Methinks! We English have a tad further to travel on this path. (Yer Shakespeare eat your heart out )

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.
I mean, some items seem to move so fast in the techno-world.
Then there's Wi-Fi. I know, I'm complaining as a newbie. Don't you think, though, that there are enough knuckleheads still alive out there that remember the whole "air-conditioning" fiasco.
When air-conditioning first came out, it was in exclusive restaurants and I believe there was even a surcharge to eat in an air-conditioned area. Then everyone came to realize that it should just be an automatic after the first place air-conditioned their whole restaurant for no extra charge.
Well, there are free Wi-Fi hotspots out there people. And guess what else? Its a heck of a lot cheaper to install a Wi-Fi setup now (yes, even comparatively) than it was to install air conditioners.
So, in short, get with the freaking program world and do what I want right now...
Wahhhh!!!

Very good analogy, hawkman. Current telephone providers are jumping in to create a consumer perception that this is another expensive to provide service and thus justify the charges for WiFi.
What they didn't count on was how cheap it is at the comsumer level and how prevalent it is becoming for people like you and me to put WiFi in our homes. Once the consumer has done this it's hard to justify paying anybody for WiFi unless your business depends on it.

Of course there's always the ScotteVest satellite dish hat to solve this whole problem.
