It may be common knowledge that cellphones can save lives. For instance, you or your loved one are stranded at the side of the road during a blizzard. A quick cellphone call for help and they have a fighting chance to make it out alive. We can all probably tell a story about how a cellphone got us out of a sticky situation. However, few people think of PDAs as live saving devices.
An article in Furtune magazine may help to change that impression. Saving Lives With a Simple PDA describes how Palms and Pocket PCs in countries such as Kenya can save lives if equipped with the right medical software. "Drugs change frequently, as do treatment regimens. But, she explains, "Doctors are out all day seeing patients two to a bed and on the floor—so many it's unbelievable. They make notes on each patient but without a handheld they have to wait until the end of the day to check reference books for drug interactions and other information." The program resulted in clear improvements in patient care."
