Sony Developing Clie with OLED Screen

Brighthand editor Ed Hardy has obtained information that Sony is going to release in a few months a Clie that will include an OLED screen. This will be the first handheld to use a display of this type.
OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays take advantage of the fact that some organic compounds glow when an electrical current is applied to them. This means there is no need of a backlight, as the individual pixels provide their own light. This allows OLED screens to be thinner and lighter than standard LEDs. Colors also tend to be more vivid.
From what I have read, this should be a big improvement not only in the screen size (thickness) but in battery consumption. Due to its self-illuminating properties, the OLED panel does not require backlighting, so the display can be manufactured thinner, brighter and is able to hold more color than a traditional LCD screen.
In addition, the OLED provides an unparalleled viewing angle while consuming less power than an LCD screen. This Organic technology will result in the screen on a mobile phone or digital camera coming to life more than ever before, making it ideal for products that demand high definition, fast moving images within today's ultra slim hand held devices.
