I've Got the Hard-Reset Blues

I made a major blunder last night that reminded me of Mark Penn's Hard reset adventure from a few weeks ago.
You see, it all started this way...I was working on creating an encrypted sql database on the Pocket PC so that encryption could be added to A.I. Sounds basic enough doesn't it? Well, it was late last night and I kept reading about how encryption WON'T work unless I installed Microsoft's Encryption Pack for Pocket PC. Since the database app wasn't working, I immediately assumed it was something to do with the encryption pack not being installed. I hadn't installed it to this point because WM 2003 is supposed to have the encryption built in.
So I ran the installer and I think I half expected the result - once I turned off the iPAQ it wouldn't turn back on without soft resetting. Once I soft reset, then all of the .NET apps on the pocket PC failed. In fact, I would tap one to start it and nothing happened at all, it was as if I was tapping a screen when the iPAQ was turned off. So I did what any red blood american boy would do - I broke down and started throwing turnips and cabbage around the house - oh, and then I remembered to uninstal the encryption pack.
Still, that didn't work either, so I felt sort of stuck. Then it dawned on me -- Resco Registry editor of course! Why didn't I think of that before chucking fresh produce at our neighbor's cat? A few registry hacks produced....absolutely nothing - yayy!
Oh and guess what? I had had some problems with the iPAQ backup utility and the "turn off" issue - mentioned here elsewhere. So I didn't have a backup. At this point, I assume you know the outcome of this tragedy - it's hard reset time. And I must also add, what is it about hard resetting these Pocket PCs these days? I feel like you need to be as limber as a circus gymnast to get the thing to reset. The instructions read like this: Push the number 1 and number 4 buttons at the same time while turning off the Pocket PC in an upside down position and soft reset the unit while left foot on blue circle and right hand on yellow. Spin again!
Should be an interesting day.....

tsk tsk - no backup?
try having to hard reset when you are out of town on business! When it happened to me, I had to wing it through all my meetings.

Now Brenda, come on, glass houses and all that?
Why didn't you have a backup on memory card while out of town? Huh, come on Brenda, explain. We want to know why.
Sprite Backup lets you create a self extracting backup that you can store on a card. Hard reset, use explorer to find the file, tap on it, and hey presto, 3 minutes later you have everything back.
But actually lets face it, there is a special routine built into all PPC's, that watches the users backup behaviour. It will monitor activity, and will schedule a hard reset to occur at precicely the time when you forgot to backup, or left your card at home, or whatever!

Here's a followup to yesterday's post.
I've manually reinstalled almost all the programs I had loaded - being oh so careful along the way- backing up as I went. Low and behold, now the iPAQ won't turn on half the time! Alarms? Fuggetaboutit!
I did the sprite upgrade, loaded the most current versions of everything, did not load "questionable" apps, soft reset a dozen times. Had to hard reset again and restored once...still the thing seems like a bag of bolts with it's erratic behavior
