I bought a new PPC a couple of days ago, a shiny, slick, expensive iPaq 5550 with WM2003.
I decided to take it easy when it came to installing my applications. I did it one by one. I reset after each instal. I backed up at each key stage. I tested some of the more demanding programmes for a while before going further. I resisted the temptation to instal some of the cool but less stable applications I've got.
After all, I'm an old hand at this aren't I. I know what I'm doing. Ain't no way I'm going to cause problems for myself.
And then this evening, I did something I'd slap a newbie for doing...........
...........I saw a new programme I'd never heard of on Handango, which said it was PPC2002 compatible (not WM2003 you note). I took a look at the screen shots, which included one of the password screen it puts in place of the standard one, and.....I fell in love with it!
So, having instantly switched from "sage old PPC expert" to "Corrrr, that's so coooooool man, I gotta get me that" newbie, I downloaded and installed it.
OK, so maybe that's not so bad. I can justify that. I write for a PPC site. I have to test these things don't I? I mean if I don't, who will?
But at the end of the instal, my PPC hung at "writing uninstal data" stage. Rather than backing out sharpish, I promptly took it out of the cradle and soft reset.
OH woe is me. Within seconds I could see what an idiot I'd been.
Up popped the cool password screen I'd seen in the screen shots, with space for 4 characters and a pretty little numerical keypad to enter them with. But you see, this is a 5550 we're talking about. It's got a fingerprint reader and supports long, strong passwords.
So how was I going to enter my 8 character alpha numeric password into a four didget slot? How was I going to swipe a finger when there was no swiper loaded?
I knew of course I couldn't, but damn did I try! I brought up the soft keybord and tried that - it froze. I connected my folding keyboard and typed in my password - fine 'till I got to letter 5, when it ran out of room. I soft reset at least 10 times. I even tried using explore via Activesync and deleting every file I could find that related to the new programme!
Nothing worked.
In the end I did what I knew I'd have to do the moment I saw that screen - I hard reset and restored from a backup.
Note to self - Twit.
And what was this fantastic programme that I just had to have? Well it's called Pocket Lady, and it's got pictures of Pretty girls in it. Therefore I can plead "I'm only a man", and be forgiven for my PPC sins can't I?
hey - not so bad. not brilliant, mind you, but not horrible. i thought you were going to mention you somehow disabled every erg of powering off ability, and ran your shiny new lithium ion polymer batteries below their threshold, at which point they become bricks, or more accurately, very strong smelling handiwipes. Don't believe me? Read my review on pdajunkie.net - i'm convinced I inhaled enough to knock off a few years of my life - and grey has been coming in very quickly of late - of course, it could be my daughter teething at night - just as toxic, i may add....

I'm sure that happens to everybody

Twit? No, if you hadn't had a backup then, well...maybe. Quite a few units out there support the long passwords, I imagine they'll get stuck too. Might be nice scenario to report.
Let this be a lesson to everyone...thinking with your pocket unit can get you into trouble. Hard resets being the least of them....
Hey Hillstrom, good to see you here. That is if you are the Hillstrom from the PI forums. And even if you're not, its still good to see you!!
I sure hope he isn't impersonating hillstrom, hillstrom would be mad and then hillstrom would really have it coming to him.
Sorry, it's late - I should be asleep by now.
It’s me, it’s just me....
Good to see you too!
You have great ideas/opinions in PPC issues so... from now on I have "ADDICT" on my daily read list…...why not…..it’s “knowledge freeware”. :?
Reading Forums has been a useful/fun way to learn how to use PPC....and now I just can’t stop reading them....

I have been looking for a site that’s somehow different from Brighthand,
more fun then "passion", more useful then ms mobile.com and more updated then Pen&Inc.... And it seems to be "ADDICT"
.... yeahhhh..why not.

Is Pocket PC Passion even alive? I know the forums are, but the home page hasn't been updated since June 21. Maybe Dale has lost the passion....
Steve
P.S. The name "Pocket PC Passion" always confused me anyway. Dale says there's only room in life for one true passion, and his is God. So what is Pocket PC Passion, a false passion?
