Yep, I want one tiny box to do everything. 0 0%
Yes, but not if I have to compromise anything to get it. 1 50.00%
Some. Two functions is good, more is too much. 0 0%
No. A phones a phone, a toasters a toaster. 1 50.00%
No way ever. I have enough trouble converging my brain with the phone. If it did something else too, I'd be lost. 0 0%

Jack of all Trades Equals Master of None?

I saw this news item over at Brighthand, and it got me thinking.
I'm a European, so if you read the article you'll see I'm meant to want as much convergence as possible. I'm supposed to want my pocket PC to act as a phone, and a camera, and make the toast, and anything else they can squeeze in there, whereas you guys from the other side of the pond aren't interested in that.
OK, so the article was about smart phones integrating PIM functions and possibly cameras, but the fact is I don't agree with my fellow Europeans if what it implied is true.
For example, I never did understand the concept behind the Pocket PC Phone Edition. I mean, why would I want to go back to a phone the size of a sandwich? Why would I want to make it difficult to look something up on my PPC while I'm talking to someone on the phone? And why would I want my navigation system interrupted every time a call came in?
So I don't. I have a small neat phone, that does a great job of being a, umm, phone, and a PPC that I can easily use for other things while I'm talking!
And when the PPC needs a phone connection, or the phone needs a number, they can talk to each other just fine over Bluetooth.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not against convergence totally. I'd love it if my digital stills camera could give me the full range and quality of video functions I get from my video camera. It would be great if my DECT phone at home could be put in my pocket as I left the house, and act as my mobile once I'm out of range. But I see a lot of convergence for convergence sake, and have to wonder why people put up with the compromises that result?
So come on, what do you think? Take the poll and let me know.
Maybe I should just move to Florida. Hmmm............

Mark,
I'm with you on this but for different reasons. One I don't like to carry a cell phone - I do, yes, but I don't like it - no sense in mixing up something I dislike with something I love . Reminds me of a dessert I ordered in Paris where they put mushrooms on the rice pudding. Yuck, what could be worse?
Another reason is enough can go wrong with either device independent of each other. You mix them both together and you have even more likelyhood of disaster.
JMHO,
Brad
