Microsoft Redies New Smartphone Deals

Gates to make the call for wireless

A little bird over at ZDNet got an advanced preview of Microsoft´s plans at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association conference in New Orleans to announce that they will add another wireless device maker to their list of Pocket PC Phones. Research In Motion, a Waterloo, Ontario based company will develop smart phones based on Microsoft´s software.

Also, Microsoft plans to announce that Sprint PCS will sell two camera phones that will use the smart phone software.

"Microsoft, Symbian and PalmSource are battling over what operating system handset makers use to build new generations of cell phones that combine the features of a personal digital assistant and a cell phone. For now, it´s a very young market with about 2 million devices in circulation. By comparison, there were 400 million traditional cell phones sold last year."

Microsoft Redies New Smartphone Deals

Looks like Microsoft Smartphone has lost Samsung, but Phone Edition still strong. Smartphone is dead, long live PocketPC Phone Edition?

Samsung dumps MS Smartphone
March 12, 2003
The only cell phone made by Samsung and powered by Microsoft software will be Pocket PC phone. Dumping production of MS Smartphone was part of a deal of Samsung to take Symbian/Series 60 software to produce smartphones. At CeBIT 2003 Samsung presented many many phones powered by Symbian/Series 60, some smartphones with Palm OS, some with Pocket PC Phone Edition, but none with MS Smartphone 2002 despite the fact, that first prototypes with MS Smartphone appeared on various shows before Samsung even joined Symbian
