According to this story on IDG.net, Windows CE .NET will be available Mid-2003! It is expected that this upgrade will add a lot more features such as Voice over IP, a firewall and wireless networking enhancements.
What is missing from the article is information regarding whether it will take advantage of the XScale architecture so consumers can get a speed boost.
"McKendric will include a sample VoIP application when it ships and offer a proxy client that will allow VoIP applications to be used through firewalls, Schnarel said. For residential gateway products, the updated OS will offer a firewall and support for 802.11b, which will allow device makers to offer residential gateways that also function as wireless access points..."
Well, this news that´s not means anything. Windows CE .net was shipped since mid last year to all OEM, but they have installed it only in a few PPCs. The reason is simple, what we see in the reality is what is on top of the OS, in current pdas PPC2002. So far I have not seen any news about a new release to replace this one. So you can give OEM how many OS you want and if they don´t have the UI (which is PPC2002) they wont use it unless they have a team of programmer to design a new UI.
