with the new pocket pcs in the horizon at reasonable prices i have decided that its a good time to finally get one. my main concern would be the ability to jump on WiFi networks. so my question is that what should i be looking for when im shopping for one? should the pocketpc specs specifically say that it supports WiFi? or is it possible to attach a card through a secure digital expansion slot or whatever other slot it might be. i bring up secure digital as its the one that viewsonic will be using in their pocketpc.
any help will be appreciated
For most people the best solution for a pocket pc is in iPAQ´s product line. Though I feel that iPAQ isn´t necessarily the best, they do (imho) have the most flexibe product line and broadest market support as far as accessories and expansion packs. This makes them the most adaptable for whatever Wifi/Bluetooth/etc solution your looking for as well as general nifty gizmos suchs as gps to cameras to bar code scanners.
I don´t know if I would buy a Viewsonic because they haven´t proven themselves yet. If you want to go cheep try and find an older Jornada with built in CF for your wireless card. An ipaq with the sleeve is good too because you can always swap out for a different card.
I have a Casio E-200; not sure you can even buy these anymore, but I got it because it has 2 card slots: SD and CF. I got the Socket WLAN card and it works great, and I still have another slot free for added memory. If I were buying today, I´d get the Toshiba e740; WiFi built-in and still 2 slots.
Biggest problem is power consumption; I get about an hour or so using the WiFi card, and it´s considered "low power."
heh i would have checked my grammer if my post was gonna be on the front page.
anyway, ive looked around. from what im seeing, budget pocketpcs have one thing in common...they have only one expansion slot. thats really inconvenient. i have managed to find out that there is a secure digital wifi card in the making...
cool but i know i would be extrememly annoyed if i had to switch between that and a expansion memory card frequently.
im gonna wait till around christmas. from what i understand, dell is gonna be releasing mid-range pocketpcs along with the cheaper version so hopefully one of them will have two slots. if not, ill start saving for a toshiba e740
I have a Jornada 568 and an Ambicom 802.11b CF adaptor. I´ve been able to hook up with 2 WiFi networks without a problem.
I was going to use the Symbol Wireless Networker, but the cost was too high (I paid half as much for tha Ambicom). From what I understand the battery life is a bit better with the Symbol, and the drivers are native to the Jornada... but all it took was a simple install to get the Ambicom set up and running. Battery life is about 2 hours when actively surfing with Messenger running in the background.
