IRVINE, California -- Greenlight Wireless Corporation today announced the release of its Dcipher™ service, which dynamically reformats web content for handheld mobile devices.
“People accessing the Internet with handheld PDA devices are frustrated by slow connection speeds and the difficulty of navigating web sites designed to be viewed on a large, conventional monitor,” said Greenlight CIO Mark Sieve. “Dcipher service allows a web site owner to provide content for the growing number of wireless web users, without the costs associated with building and maintaining a separate handheld-friendly site.”
Dcipher works by automatically detecting handheld devices and reformatting web pages so that side-to-side scrolling is either greatly reduced or altogether eliminated. The service is invisible to desktop browsers, so altering the look and feel of the web site is unnecessary. Handheld users can choose to view a PDA-optimized or text-only version of the web page, or to disable Dcipher, by using a small toolbar that appears with the reformatted content. Dcipher allows web pages to load faster, provides added browsing security, and works with any handheld device that can load a standard web page.
Setting up Dcipher service simply involves pasting a unique code key into the site’s web pages. Content providers purchase blocks of wireless “page views”, which are automatically refreshed to avoid interruptions in service. Administrative preferences and account information can be accessed through an online control panel.
As more people begin accessing the Internet with mobile devices, content providers find themselves scrambling to make their sites more accessible to this emerging market. Ovum Research forecasts healthy growth in wireless Internet usage, growing to more than 484 million users by 2005. International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts even more growth, estimating that the number of wireless Internet subscribers in the United States, Western Europe, Asia/Pacific and Japan will soar to more than 329 million by 2003.
