I just got myself a ipaq 3835 as well as a cf modem, and was wondering what service providers extend there service to handhelds as well as desktops. I have heard that aol had a program, but unfortunatley it does not work for pocket pc 2002. Is this true? What other companies offer service? I want to be able to travel around the states using my dial up account to check my email and such.
Earthlink just released a new package deal to allow remote access to the Earthlink/Mindspring network. Is this what you are looking for? Or more of a home RAS solution?
STEP BY STEP
I can tell you how I do it and it may be of some help to you:
1. I have a 56k Pretec CF modem.
2. I have an ATT Worldnet account.
3. I go to Connections Manager with the modem in place and go to "When needed, automically connect to the Internet using these setting and choose "new"
4. I create a dialup object called ATTWorldnet, select my modem which is only an option if it is inserted.
5. I set the baud rate to 115200 and click advanced.
6. Under Connection preferences I leave it at the defaults of 8, none, 1, hardware
7. On the TCP/IP tab I leave it at server-assigned IP address.
8. Use leave the default boxes as they are; slip not selected, use software compression selected, use IP header compression
9. On the name server tab, I put in the DNS entries of my provider, which are available to me from the providers home page, and in my case, I have saved a file called account.txt which was created on my desktop years ago when I first installed my ATT software. After saving that file, I removed ATT´s proprietary software and just use standard dialup networking using the settings in the file. You may have to hunt down some of the information you need for your particular provider.
10. Click OK, then next, and enter my country code, 1, my area code 719, and my isp´s dialup number.
11. I click next and leave this screen at the defaults. Depending on your situation, you may need to change these, but probably not in most cases.
12. I click finish, ok.
CONNECTING THE FIRST TIME
Now I can click connect, on my ATTWorldnet connectoid that I have just created and test it. The first thing that happens for me is that a login box pops up wherein I can put my username and password for ATTWorldnet, and save those settings.
USING THE CONNECTOID IN APPLICATIONS
Now assuming that you have ATTWorldnet showing in the connections page. the dialup service should begin as soon as you open your browser and start to try browsing to something that is not cached. Also, your Inbox can be configured to use this connectiod and will dial whenever you tell it to send and receive.
