The West Bengal finance minister Asim Dasgupta has brought pets and cattle into his tax net in order to increase revenue and achieve zero deficit budget by 2005-06.During the current assembly session the finance minister introduced bills bringing newer areas under the tax net while raising existing rates. The tax burden for the current financial year will affect both the common people as well as industry. Rural poor people are also not left out. The Assembly has already passed a bill empowering Panchayats to collect tax on 15 different heads in rural areas.Mr Dasgupta has forced owners of cattle to pay up if they graze in vested lands while pilgrims will have to pay tax for visiting holy places like Dakhineswar Kali temple. The state has proposed a tax on Set-Top Boxes. The industry is unhappy over entry tax, turnover tax on cosmetics and cement.
