Just For Fun on July 4th Weekend

Just for fun on this July 4th, have you ever read Tech Tales -- various calls to helpdesks and computer support people?

It's been many years since I've worked on a helpdesk, but I can still remember some of the dumbest calls like they were yesterday. My favorite was a company had called because their server crashed. I went to the location and started looking and found that their proxy was clogged to the gills with porn that was downloaded and stored on the PDC.

keep reading..I knew this was going to be a touchy situation - probably costing someone their job so I cleared out 1 gig of the porn and left the rest as evidence as I scanned the proxy tables.

It turns out the culprit was the male VP of the company! Which as the netadmins among us know, you better be sure about the evidence or now it's MY job in jeopardy. Well, I traced the IP address of the machine that was used. I got the times I got the login-names, finally I was ready to explain to the frustrated management what had happened. I sat down with them and said "Well, I've found what's wrong with the server and I'm not sure how to tell you."

The prez said "Were we hacked? Go ahead tell me, as long as it is fixed I want to know."

I said: "Well, a computer here in the building has been used for downloading porn and it filled up the hard drives on your Primary Domain Controller, usually you'd just get an out of memory error, but since it bled over to the main hard drive, it crashed the Server.

He started laughing: "That's the funniest thing I ever heard! ha ha ha ha... Now Brad, you are a funny guy, tell me what really happened."

I said: "Unfortunately that is what happened."

He of course, didn't believe his company could have a porn addict working on site, so he wanted to see this for himself. I was growing more and more uncomfortable because some of the stuff was outright sickening and I didn't want to explain how certain animals and same sex partners had "consented" to such acts.

His face turned beet red and he said "OMG! Which computer has this been coming from?"

I pretended not to know the VP. "Well, the username connected to the images is named John "Ricky" Ricardo (Name changed to protect the guilty)

Next thing I hear was a thunderous "JOOOHHHHNN!!! Get IN HERE NOW!" echoing through the office and the corridors.

I was asked to go finish my work and the door closed behind me.

Do you have a tech tale to tell? Please post it!!!
