Sometimes when I sit down to program what appears to be a simple app, I wonder what I have gotten myself into. One false move and I find myself buried in bugs! A new company, called Forward Pass has put together some software that promises to let you 'create pocket pc applications on the road' from the comfort of your La-Z-Boy recliner, or wherever else, you'd like. Hey, if it helps get around me having to learn SQL.CE I'm all for it!
"Forward Pass is an easy-to-use authoring system for Windows® Powered Pocket PCs. People with minimal programming experience can produce polished, visually interesting, applications that run on any PDA using the Pocket PC 2002 operating system. And they can do it on the road, away from their desktop computers.
Forward Pass does not require a separate development environment. With just a click of a toolbar button, the program switches instantly from run mode to edit mode. Using the built-in form and script editors, applications are designed and tested on the device itself. And developers can access any control's properties and methods using a customized version of Microsoft's VBScript as the programming language. But unlike other development environments, you won't have to depend as much on ActiveX controls for ordinary things like accessing files or showing images. "

MIDLOTHIAN, VA - August 22, 2002 - Forward Pass Systems today announced the availability of Forward Pass, an easy-to-use authoring system for Windows® Powered Pocket PCs. People with minimal programming experience can produce polished, visually interesting, applications that run on any PDA using the Pocket PC 2002 operating system. And they can do it on the road, away from their desktop computers.
Forward Pass does not require a separate development environment. With just a click of a toolbar button, the program switches seamlessly from run mode to edit mode. Using the built-in form and script editors, applications are designed and tested on the device itself. And developers can access any control's properties and methods using a customized version of Microsoft's VBScript as the programming language. Forward Pass also includes a large number of high level functions and commands. Unlike other authoring environments, developers will not have to depend as much on ActiveX controls for ordinary things like file access and image rendering.
As an alternative to typing scripts on a handheld device, Forward Pass includes a desktop program for editing scripts using an ActiveSync connection. And once the application is ready, the desktop program can automatically build an installation package by connecting to the device and retrieving the necessary files.
The program includes background color gradients and over eighty visual transitions including wipes, reveals, and slides. It also sports a built-in image box control that features drawing tools usable either with the stylus or through script commands. This makes the image box ideal for capturing signatures or annotating images. Not only that, developers can load two bit-maps into an image control and set the control to act as either a command button or a toggle button. Exciting, professional interfaces require just a few taps of the stylus.
