What WERE they thinking? NEC released their latest HPC under the marketing header "Palm Killer". Only one small problem. It retails for around $1000! Considering the price of the Palms are going as low as $125 that's going to be a tough pill to swallow.
I would warn PocketPC manufacturers to try to stay in the $500-600 range or below when pricing their units. At $1000 you can purchase a halfway-decent laptop! Yes, the HPC is smaller and more portable, but I am afraid given the choice and same pricing structure, most consumers would go with a laptop that gave them full OS and keyboard capabilities.
"Just like several of its competitors in the increasingly crowded handheld PC market, NEC's second HPC has been dubbed a "Palm killer" by an over-zealous marketing department. The NEC MobilePro 300E runs Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 operating system and, priced about $1000, is more akin to low-end pocket PC offerings from Compaq, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard. Pocket PC 2002 devices have the grunt to handle multimedia applications but this is reflected in a price that surpasses those of all but the most expensive Palm devices. "
