Microsoft Releases DirectPlay for Pocket PC 2002

A week or so ago, we posted an item about how Games are dominating the PocketPC software sales at this time. With the release of DirectPlay for PocketPC, games should be able to get even better! It seems Microsoft is hoping DirectPlay for PocketPC will have the same effect DirectX had for Windows games.

Developers can follow the download link below to get the SDK. I get first dibbs on anything you release!! Microsoft Releases DirectPlay for Pocket PC 2002
REDMOND, Wash., March 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of the DirectPlay® API for Pocket PC 2002, a free download for developers of games and multiuser online applications that enables games and other applications to connect and interoperate over wired and wireless networks.

When utilized for game communications, the DirectPlay API allows games to take advantage of new communications options as they become available -- with no change to the game code. Because developers no longer need to focus on writing complex communications code, they have more time in their development schedules to focus on other vital product attributes, such as game environments.

This release of DirectPlay supports both regular wired network connections and 802.11b wireless connections, enabling the creation of dynamic wireless mobile games for Pocket PC users.

Game and multimedia developers can obtain DirectPlay for Pocket PC 2002 free from the Microsoft® Web site at http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/ (connect-time charges may apply).

Microsoft DirectX at the Game Developers Conference 2002

At the Game Developers Conference 2002, being held March 19-23 at the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, Calif., Microsoft will present, via a one-day Sponsored Tutorial, the latest product and technology updates on DirectX® API graphics performance optimizations, shader optimization, material surface physics for shader writers, and the DirectPlay networking layer and art pipeline support. Microsoft also will present several sessions during the main conference and is the principal sponsor of the Fourth Annual Independent Games Festival, as well as sponsor of the Game Developer Choice Awards. Interested parties can obtain additional details on GDC 2002 at http://www.gdconf.com/ .
