Citrix Technology Gives Pocket PC 2002 Users Complete Access

One of the strongest features of PocketPCs that is just now getting some serious ink is the ability to access applications remotely when you are away from the office. Just a year or so ago you most likely would have to lug around a laptop, dial into the company's RAS server and run the application you needed from the laptop itself.

Microsoft's terminal server client allows you to run the application you need from a PocketPC in a desktop emulated environment. And NOW, Citrix is getting into the PocketPC business with their MetaFrame client for PocketPC. It certainly looks like we all will be telecommuting and working from home soon!

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002--Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS - news), a global leader in application serving and portal software and services, today announced Citrix® MetaFrame® software supports and enhances Pocket PC 2002, the most recent version of Microsoft's operating system for Pocket PC handheld computing devices. Citrix MetaFrame, together with Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA®) technology, provides users of Pocket PC 2002 devices with wireless access to Windows®, UNIX® or Java(TM) applications using a fraction of the normal bandwidth requirement. Screen updates, keystrokes and mouse clicks are transported between client and server over the network. Users see and work with the application's interface, but 100 percent of the application executes on the server. Additional capabilities like panning and scaling and SpeedScreen(TM) provide an enhanced user experience.

``Accessing certain applications on handheld devices can be difficult - full, rich versions may not be available, attachments may not be accessible or they may require a lengthy download process. Citrix's MetaFrame Pocket PC 2002 client provides a unique value-add that eases these strains and simplifies the complexity,'' said Larry Ritter, director and general manager, client server products at Citrix. ``As business professionals continue to embrace the use of handheld devices, Citrix remains focused on enabling these customers to conduct business at any time from any location.''

Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 contains significant updates including a new user interface, simpler navigation and enhanced customizability. In addition, Pocket PC 2002 offers increased device security and an improved Web browser.

``As the industry leader in Pocket PCs, Compaq is pleased to see Citrix's support for this dynamic category of access devices,'' said Cindy Box, Compaq's director of marketing for iPAQ Mobile Solutions. ``The popularity of the iPAQ Pocket PC proves that more and more customers want to take their information, content and Internet access with them, wherever they go. Citrix MetaFrame allows our customers to stay connected to their applications wirelessly, increasing their productivity and giving them greater freedom to roam.''

Citrix customers can download the Citrix ICA client for all versions of the Pocket PC operating system at http://www.citrix.com/download/win-downloads.asp.

About Citrix ICA

Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) is an industry standard for server-based computing. Citrix ICA technology includes a server software component, a network protocol component, and a client software component. ICA separates application logic, which executes 100 percent on the server, from the user interface. This allows efficient, server-based application installation, management, deployment and support. The ICA network protocol transports keystrokes, mouse clicks and screen updates over standard protocols to the client, typically consuming only 10-15 kilobits-per-second of network bandwidth. ICA client software, which supports virtually any device or platform, lets users view and work with the interface as if the application were running locally.
