That's a little like asking why you'd want to open a McDonalds when there is a Burger King, Carl's Jr. and Jack-in-the-Box in the same city.
Yes, there are 3 good free options out there, but more is always better. I'm all for having more choices, especially with browsers.
Google seems to want to get their finger into every pie, from email to photos, so why not a browser? Seems like they are trying to set themselves up to be more of a 1 stop shop, which I kind of like, since their products should play well with each other, especially since they are committed to keeping their products free all the way around.
Of course, I suspect that similar to GMail, it will involve some seriously targeted advertising, based on browsing history and what it can gleen from your emails, but if you don't like that you can stick with one of the others.
If and when it happens, I'm sure I'll give it a test drive.
