Those of us who own Pocket PCs with WiFi built in - and who among us do not have it built in? Shame on you! Anyway, Skyhook Wireless is launching their new Positioning solution that allows you find your way using Wifi instead of GPS. Good news too they already have the Pocket PC client Bad news, it seemingly works best in larger metropolitan areas where there are more WiFi access points for signal triangulation. Startup Skyhook Wireless this week will launch its flagship product, the Wi-Fi Positioning System, which is an alternative to GPS technology. WPS is client software that includes a reference database of more than 1.5 million private and public Wi-Fi access points, along with their locations.
The WPS client software uses this reference database to calculate a device's location to within 20 to 40 meters. Database coverage includes the 25 most populated cities in the United States, where GPS signals are sometimes muddled by interference, officials said.
Although we couldn't find a link to the Pocket PC client, we have our eyes peeled. What do you make of this new technology. Do you think this technology will eventually kill GPS?
I can't think how reliable could be, probably in cities like Tokio or Hong Kong. But GPS it's the most reliable system, besides everyday we're seeing more products with the latest technology embeded on GPS's. And more important prices of GPS receivers are relatively inexpensive.
