The Pocket PC Addict Schooner After years of watching its base of business travelers grow, Carnival finally decided it would be nice if guests could check their e-mail while checking out the sunset. The company had been offering wireless Internet access on its ships for a long time but only on a localized basis. Guests had to confine their Web surfing to certain rooms on the ships, while relying on a limited number of ship computers.
Last year, the company resolved to change that with an ambitious project to build a ship where the Internet would be accessible anywhere on the boat, from bow to stern, in all the cabins and on all the decks. via eWeek.
Interesting concept for cruise lines such as Carnival to implement WiFi on board. I view cruises as a chance to get away. Get away from the phone, e-mail and the Internet. So I doubt I would use it much, if at all during a cruise. Would WiFi access make you more or less likely to take a cruise with Carnival?
After some glowing reviews of carnival, I don't think it would affect my choice too much, but one thing, would this be free with your paid ticket? It might cost extra, and perhaps alot.
I looked for a price on this but didn't find it. My guess is they'd sneak and add it to the total cost of the cruise itself. It would probably go something like this. Travel agent: Ok, the fare for the cruise, dock fees, taxes etc. etc. it comes to $2847.39. Hey! I almost forgot do you want to do the WiFi for the week? There's an added fee for that which would bring the bill to $2997.57. It's 24/7 for the whole travel time. You: (thinking) well, I am paying _________ already..I guess I might as well go for it. "Sure sign me up!"
{While the Valor also offers an Internet cafe equipped with flat-panel workstations, it can now guarantee that any Wi-Fi-enabled laptop will work in all its 1,487 staterooms and in every lounge, bar and restaurant and at every pool desk. The ship, which sails weekly from Miami to the Caribbean, offers Wi-Fi cards and rental laptops for a nominal fee and applies a charge of 25 cents per minute for Wi-Fi connectivity.}
{The new features became an instant hit with Carnival customers as well as with many of its staffers. Less than a month after the Valor's maiden voyage, revenues from Wi-Fi charges had already doubled expectations.
While it will take a little longer to determine whether the new wireless features have translated into increased bookings on the Carnival Valor, the initial signs are strong. Harshaw said that every week Carnival hears from more and more customers who are interested in booking cruises but first want to be sure they can bring their laptops along. }
Give me a break! What is it with these people? Are their lives so poorly managed that going on a cruise for a few days is going to destroy their business? It's like the schmuck in the restaurant who is working one client with a meal and another on his cell phone. They just don't have a clue about separating business from life. Or, maybe that's the problem, They Don't Have A Life!
Good Grief!
