Boston Pocket PC has some good detailed information about Microsoft's new Activesync version 4.0.0. It was released to compliment Microsoft's new WM2005 OS. With all the reported enhancements, the biggest drawback of this version appears to be Microsoft has done away with WiFi syncing due to security issues. There are some other great new UI and usability enhancements, but one main feature missing from previous versions of ActiveSync is Wireless ActiveSync over WiFi. Due to security holes that could not be patched in time before release this feature was omitted. Many people will probably complain about the loss of this feature, but you can see their point that it would a greater disaster if there were security breaches of sensitive information. Hopefully we will see it return in an upcoming update. If you are using Activesync 4.0 with a Windows 2003 SE device or older it is recommended that you install ActiveSync 3.8 first then install 4.0 to make sure you have all the proper interfaces and converters for your device. When you synch your older device you will use the older UI, when you synch a Windows Mobile 5 device you will use the newer Activesync 4.0 UI. Will you upgrade your version of Activesync to 4.0.0 or stay at the version you currently use? Why or why not?
Sure does not buy you much until 5.0 comes out - then most of have to buy new devices, which is getting old. The way OS upgrades are handled on PPC is not effecient.
