Announcement Forum Abuse: Read Before Posting Announcements!

In the last week or so we have been noticing more and more companies abusing the announcement forum. By abuse, what I mean is posting off-topic, non-relevant posts to the forum that are actually advertisements for people to go elsewhere to purchase things that are not even remotely related to Pocket PCs. Additionally, there have been a few companies that do sell Pocket PC related items and services who are repeatedly (on a daily basis) posting differing links to their products. Equally, this is abusive because this site is not owned by or dedicated solely to any one hardware or software company. This is a news site, it's not a store and it's not a spam repository.
I believe the reason people are doing this is because our forum posts show up on the front page in the order that they are received. But some companies have decided that every time they add a different color sticker to their product packaging they need to announce it in the forum. This is ridiculous. We know what they are doing. And they know what they're doing.. And it is abusive. These posts have been deleted as we have caught them. But I feel I must ask that if you are one of the Pocket PC companies trying to market your products on the back of our site in this manner, either stop it or take advantage of some of our sponsorship opportunities. We have the banner program priced at probably the lowest of any other Pocket PC site. Yet people would rather lower themselves to abuse to avoid the few pennies a day it would take to run a successful banner campaign here.
And while we're on the subject, let me make a little footnote. If you use the submit news link to the left of the site to submit news to the editors, and then you turn right around and post it into the announcement forum, 9 times out of 10 it will not be considered for the front page. There are several reasons for this. One of which is it would result in a double forum post that would appear on the front page. Another reason is that for the most part it would be redundant information. I suggest to people offering interesting news, products, reviews or software who want to submit their news to us, that they be patient with the submission process. Sometimes it takes a day, sometimes it takes a week. However, patience usually pays off for interesting news.
Announcement Forum Posting Rules:
1. Make sure that the post you create is at least remotely Pocket PC related
2. Create a story for your post. Posts that contain nothing but a Web link will be deleted.
3. Repetitive posts promoting the same product with slight variances will still be considered abusive. In other words if you manufacture stylii, Three different posts to "announce" each of the three colors you carry is abusive. One announcement stating all three colors is enough.

I believe what you mean by abuse is:
Man: You sit here, dear.
Wife: All right.
Man: Morning!
Waitress: Morning!
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam...
Waitress: ...spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...
Vikings: Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!
Waitress: ...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!
Man: Why can't she have egg bacon spam and sausage?
Wife: THAT'S got spam in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam... (Crescendo through next few lines...)
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like spam!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam.
Wife: I don't like spam!
Man: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.
Man: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then?
Waitress: You mean spam spam spam spam spam spam... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Spam spam spam spam!

Arrrgh. . .

That's a real bummer too. What made this site as great as it is today is the great content that Brad and others work hard to dig up for us.
The forums are really great too, but anytime you get spammers anywhere on the Net, it's going to degenerate into something that sucks.
James had a really interesting article about a $1 Billion lawsuit won against spammers in Iowa recently. . .
Everyone hates spammers, and if it continues, the companies abusing must be identified so that we will know not to do any business with them. There are thousands of people here every hour, and if we all boycott the abusers, we can hit them where they live.

Which brings up the question, are there any ways we can threaten with legal action or something? To keep away new ones?

I don't believe this is a legal issue. There are various ways we can put a stop to it. Or as Hantra mentioned bring about public scorn.

Public scorn, that's tempting.

Personally I advocate the use of electro cattle prods (Hmmmmm! cattle prods). I wonder if there is a virtual equivalent?
I agree with all the above as I regularly visit PPCA from work (which takes ages to download, due to an appalling connection at my works end) and it is annoying to wait for a post to open up just to find that it contains nothing more than a link to an item I have no interest in. So gwad knows what it must be like to people who are still on dail up?

Addic, you would be a prime candidate for RSS I will be working on the feeds this weekend. So with any luck, we should have both the front page news feed and the forum feed working great! depending on the bandwidth issues, I may even be able to include a few responses into the forum feed so the you can simply click on a response and reply to that directly on the site! 8-)

I forget where, but I really enjoyed a quote in someone's signature "I'm going to be rich when I invent a way to stab people in the face over the internet"

Brad,
Can you tell me how you get the feed to show details? I set settings in Pocket RSS to show details and it never works. I just get headlines.

Hi,
You should be able to view it using the "forum RSS feed" which has news too.

Yeah, I know, but i seem to have a problem with Pocket RSS on my device. It doesn't like PB 5. Have you noticed and problems? The screen height seems larger on your screen shot. Is it set at 125? I emailed Bryan at HappyJack and told him we have a lot more real estate to work with now in PB. I am hoping we can make the screen a lot bigger height wise in Pocket RSS.
Tell me, is the information that comes through on a feed up to the creator of the feed? I notice on your feeds I can read the post, but on other forum feeds I just get headlines. Is that because you created your feed that way or can I adjust a setting in Pocket Rss to make all my feeds display descriptions. I have that checked in Pocket RSS settings already but as I have said, not all feeds seem to have a description.
