Malaysian PDA Market Sees 10% Tax

PDA tax: Users up in arms
As if the PDA mmarket wasn't struggling enough, it looks as though the Customs Department in Malasia is going to enforce a 10% tax on handheld computers with Wireless connectivity. According to the article, they have reclassified the devices as telecommunication devices (i.e. cellphones). HP is appealing this because it would further hurt sales due to them having to pass on the costs to consumers.
"PETALING JAYA: Malaysian technology enthusiasts and industry players alike were baffled by the Customs Department's decision to impose a 10% sales tax on handheld computers with wireless connectivity, saying it would not only be a blow against the market but also against the Government's plan to increase the people's access to ICT.
The Star reported on Oct 28 that Customs was going to impose a 10% sales tax of personal digital assistants (PDAs) with WiFi or Bluetooth features, by reclassifying the popular devices under the 8525.20 900 tariff code which generally covers telecommunications devices. "

Is this just a money grab or what?

Thumbs up Re:

The market is struggling and in this situation the government must gives its support to the PDA industry. Telecommunication devices and services all over the world is expanding. In order to support the PDA industry government must lift up the taxes on PDAs and related devices.

Big markets like HP, DELL, HTC, Vodafone, palm, Blackberry, At&T must work together to deal with the situation of taxes in the country...
