We've had several conversations about whether these new "mini-PCs" like the OQO devices will kill the Pocket PC line. Some have argued that having a full blown Windows XP / Office and other full versions of programs all in something around the size of their PDAs is a great idea. While others say there probably won't be an "instant on" feature that gives instant access to tasks and calendar.
Well, Computerworld has posted a small review of the $1,999 OQO device and the author, Tom Mainelli, seems none too thrilled with it. "Design distractions
I might be willing to overlook the unit's unhurried performance if the Model 01 was just a bit more logically designed and more comfortable to use. The horizontally oriented display slides upward to expose the QWERTY-style keyboard -- a design that seems clever until you realize it prevents you from tilting the top of the display downward to prevent glare. Instead, you have to angle the whole device.
The display itself is the perfect width for viewing Web pages configured to display well at 800 by 600 pixels; but visit a site with wider dimensions, and you'll be doing plenty of side scrolling in addition to the vertical scrolling you'd expect. "
It's one of those things that sounds better on paper than in actual life.
Instant-on, battery life, UI, applications, size, etc. are all reasons why PPCs are better than devices like the OQO. Oh, BTW, MetaProducts Offline Explorer has no problems leeching this site.

Not to mention you could buy 2 souped up laptops for the same price. I agree, this wouldn't serve very well as a PIM device. It would probably end up sitting somewhere as a desktop PC with an occasional removal for business trips.

Drats!!! The evil Offline Explorer has sneaked past our filters :P Actually, I haven't seen any abuse from OE yet so haven't had the need to block it. But I've got my eye on you!
