Spotted this post over at Pocket PC Thoughts this morning about how a site called Portable Media Center Movies has posted Pocket PC compatible movies that are public domain such as Three Stooges and the Anti-sex propaganda film Sex Madness (The Horror! ) for you to download and take with you for viewing on your Pocket PC. "The Portable Media Center devices created a new market niche for movie enthusiasts. To help reduce the time it takes to convert content, we are delivering preformatted movies ready for immediate transfer to PMC players like the Creative Zen PMC and Samsung PMC. Many of the movies you find here are public domain offerings available at higher resolution in MPEG-2 format from the Internet Archive. If you've ever tried downloading anything from the Internet Archive, you know the high quality files generally take many hours. We've done the downloading and converted them to a format ready for transfer to PMC devices. This format is also optimized for Pocket PCs with 320x240 resolution. DivX portable movies will be available soon, too. Downloading is currently restricted to registered users. All public domain video files are distributed using BitTorrent. "
Free or not it's just not worth it. You have to submit to BitTorrent to get the files. That means you become part of a P2P network which means Portable Media gets to use your computer as a server for their files.
Do you get any benefit from this? I don't see one. You have to give up your disk space, your ISP connection and open your computer to any jerk looking for an open port.
Count me out and I'm not touching this with a 10 foot pole.

Excellent point bluemax. I tried to download Night of the Living Dead to compare the quality to my DVD->wmv encoded version. I never have been able to get good bitrate downloads with BitTorrent, and this time was no exception...so I simply gave up.
Looks like I'll just continue encoding my own.
