U.N. To Put An End To Spam?

U.N. Aims to Bring Spam 'Epidemic' to End
Lets see a raise of hands showing the number of people here who love spam...anyone? Well, apparently the U.N. sees spam as a modern day "epidemic" and is working toward making it easier to prosecute junk email senders.
"GENEVA—The United Nations is aiming to bring a "modern day epidemic" of junk e-mail under control within two years by standardizing legislation to make it easier to prosecute offenders, a leading expert said Tuesday.
"[We have] an epidemic on our hands that we need to learn how to control," Robert Horton, the acting chief of the Australian communications authority, told reporters. "International cooperation is the ultimate goal."
The International Telecommunications Union is hosting a meeting on spam in Geneva this week that brings together regulators from 60 countries as well as various international organizations, including the Council of Europe and the World Trade Organization."

Help me out here...I thought the UN was supposed to be out on the international stage helping to maintain world balance in the form of ending starvation, violence and tyranny. How in the world Spam ever made it to UN's agenda is beyond me. Next they'll be fighting to prevent people from cutting the tags off mattresses. :P
What do you all make of this?

People ought to use spam filters, and get it so spammers make no money off anything, thus, the end of spam. Same with spyware and viruses...

For some reason, I get very hungry when I sift through my spam mail...does this count as ending starvation?

It's an international problem causing millions (if not billions) in lost productivity. That's how.
Also, the only way to eliminate spam will be international cooperation. If country A has a tough anti-spam law, but country B doesn't, spammers can just use country B to send spam. You don't want the equivalent of the Cayman Islands for spammers.
Personally, I think any effort to eliminate spam is worthwhile. Yes, there are bigger issues, but that's also true in the U.S. Police forces have murders to deal with, but still dedicate resources to traffic enforcement. The U.S. goverment has a war going on, but they are working on laws to stop file swapping. It's nothing new.

See I had an entirely different take altogether. When I first read the title of this thread I thought the UN was putting its foot down on all of the unhealthy cans of "Spam" that we have shipped to third world countries. Now I find out its about email ?
