Question PhotoFlash? on an 8125? not hardly!

My new Cingular 8125 camera setup includes a so-called "flash." I noticed that setting it "on" causes it to light up, sort of like a (very small) floodlight. Then when shutter clicks, it becomes a small bit brighter and then turns off. I thought it must be defective. Who wants a flash that is really mostly a floodlight?
The manual does not help; calling Cingular did not help; no one knew whether it was defective or supposed to be that way. They sent another one; it does the same thing.
Does anybody know how (and why) this sort of works?

My 8525 does the same thing. I really don't think it supposed to be effective, just another so-called "feature" to use as a selling point.

It's a phone!

My assistant says that. Also, it's finally a phone whose phone book is compatible with MS Outlook. And finally, my Canon camera does not do phone calls well (inded, not at all). Thanks for your note.

The only thing that light is good for is when there's no power and I dont have my flashlight. It's pretty damn bright.

exactly

my 8125 has the same "flash" feature but im not really worried about it because i know its just a cell phone camera. you use it when you see something cool while youre out and want to show some people (ferrari enzo, naked chick, etc...).

Wow! I can't believe I missed that. Stupid me, I've been using the screen as light.
I guess you can call this a true "flash" light. (sorry, dudes from England, torch light, isn't as funny).
Thanks to this forum, I find out some new way to use this crazy thing everyday!

might call it a "flash in the pan"

except, even in the pan, it does not flash. My solution is when a real picture is needed, use a camera. Incidentally, my Canon S-45 is totally unable to make phone calls. Cheerio.

My old nextel motorola i860 has the same thing too, I think mostly all phone cameras with a "flash" are just that led light.

Yea, that flash needs to be renamed to a flash light. All it does is make your pictures blurry also, but if you need to look for your keys you just happened to drop in some high grass, there is nothing better.

never

I havent even seen a cell phone with a real flash. They all have the led on them. I don't agree that it is useless though. Before we got a digital camera, we used our cell phones. Those led flashes do take better pictures in lower light situations. I had a phone without a flash at all and it was horrible. Anyways, I think it does increase picture quality. I do like to use it when I go to bed if my wife is asleep already, and I don't want to step on anything trying to find my way to the bed with the lights off.

they are very usefull for flashlights and somewhat usefull for pictures. there are a few phones out there with actual xeon flashes. sony ericson makes a few with cybershot built in and i think the n95 has an actul flash as well. the phones that have basically anything over 3mp have good flashes because they are more or less digital cameras with phones built in.
