I've got an Ipaq 3970 that is well overdue for a hard reset (i.e a good reformat)and the last time I did it was about 3 yrs ago. At the moment she does run well but I find her to be quite sluggish sometimes and some apps take ages to load etc.
Now for some advice pls:
1. Is it well worth it to do a backup first before going ahead with the
reset. There is a built in program called Sprite Backup, this is
actually built into the PPC itself.
2. Now if I do a full backup, than a hard reset than followed by a full
restore from Sprite Backup wouldn't I than be back to square one
when I put everything back in i.e do the restore.
3. Also how about all the serials to my software will they be restored?
4. Also they advise to remove the expansion pack and also any SD or
CF cards that you have in.
I just hope that when I do the restore it will restore exactly how I
had the screen etc and all the progs setup.
Before going down the path of a reset, I assume you are running something like MemMaid or SK Tools to keep the junk files cleaned up on your iPaq? If not, I would go that route first.
If you are going to do a reset I would definitely to a backup first, of for no other reason to have access to any data that you may want later (if you do not restores). Personally, when I do a hard reset I always start from scratch which means reinstalling all apps and serial numbers as well as any tweaks. I take screen shots of my installed programs and make sure I have the latest versions ready to reinstall. I make sure I have a good copy of My Docs and then I reset. I do not store anything to my SIM, but I understand that on some devices a hard reset will clear the SIM, so you may want to remove that first if you have data on it. My SD card has never been bothered.
If you elect to do a recovery it is my understanding (as I said, I always start over) that everything in ROM will be cleaned up, but after your recovery everything else will be as it was.
