Hello all. I am new to the cite and recently picked up the 8125 as my first PDA phone. Thus far I am lovin it as a phone, email station and net surfer but I keep hearing things here and there on review sites about problems to look out for. Other than a long conversation with Cingular Data Support to get hooked up to my exchange server things have been pretty smooth.
Any comments, suggestions or cool tricks anyone can provide would be much appreciated.
Also, am I stuck with the rign tones loaded on this thing or is there a program out there that will allow me to use MP3 files as tones??? Ringtone Manager??? Something other than the generic junk!

Hey Gustie32! Welcome to Pocket PC Addict. I'm glad that the Cingular 8125 is working great for you and hopefully you wont run into any problems any time soon! I understand that there are many members on Pocket PC Addict that swear by the 8125, so you're not alone!
To answer your question about MP3 files as tones, you can! All you have to do is open ActiveSync with your phone connected, click on Explore, and then navigate to \Windows\Rings and put your MP3s (or WMAs) in there. Then just go to the Phone application on your device and the MP3 should be listed. Something to note however, MP3s will not work for SMS or E-mail alerts unfortunately. If you want to have a custom sound for those tones you'll need to upload a WAV file in the same "Rings" folder.
Let me know if this works for you I hope this helps!
I got it figured out this morning and am happy not having to listen to generic annoyance anymore. The file path is actually My Windows Mobile/Application Data/Sounds. I guess you just load whatever you want into the sounds folder and it pops up in your ring tone choices. I haven't quite played around enough to determine if you can create a folder for these on the Mini SD to save memory on the device but it's so easy to add and remove them it should matter much.
Thanks again and I hope some other 8125 users can hook me up with other cool tricks. I welcome any and all info on this thing.
over the past 6 months i've tested every pocket pc from verizon, cingular and sprint and the 8125 was my favorite, unfortunately cingular's network did not allow me to connect to goodlink and my corporate vpn while on the same connection so that was my only issue with it. i had to work with them to set-up a custom apn connection which i had to toggle to when needing to use my vpn. also the overall speed of their gsm network seemed slower that verizon's evdo.

good luck.
yeah, theinfamus1, you're right about EDGE being a slower than EVDO, considering that the peak rate for EDGE is a paltry 384kbps, and EVDO is about 2.4 Mbps. Now, you're never going to ever get those speeds, but that is still a huge difference.
Did Cingular have to set you up with a private APN to connect to your VPN? Unfortunately that's how GPRS works. Based on your profile I'm guessing you are sticking to your Treo 650? Are you considering maybe looking into a Treo 700w?
theinfamus1, I understand what you are saying about the speed of connection through GPRS but personally I am not in need of much more than I have currently. You mentioned you have respect for the 8125 yet you don't use the device. Reasoning? Only curious b/c our company is considering switching from some Treo's and some Blackberry's to the 8125 b/c of some of the capabilities yet they are not completely sold yet and i don't want to be the one to steer them the wrong way.....

take note I bought the pocket Pc on March the 11, 2006. I know 90% of the problems you might have because I already been there. So when you have time just give me a call if you need any questions answersed for the Cingular 8125 by HTC.
I, like theinfamous1, have tested almost every device available on the market at this particular time. and the Device of choice for me, right now, is the 8125. I don't have the need to VPN to work with it, so that isn't an issue for me. I do get my corporate email on it by using Intellisync Mobile Suite.
As far as the ringtones... there is an easy way to get any sound that you have on the device, whether on the SD card or on the device to play as your ringtone. - Simply navigate to whereever that sound is and tap and hold on the file. The last option in the ensuing menu is Set As Ringtone.
Works great. Just don't take your SD card out if the file is located there. mine didn't like that too much.

theinfamous, do I have to have Cingular setup an APN for me or is there a way to do that on my own?
Any wave file you may have in your music collection can be used on the 8125. If you have your music in iTunes you will need to use some sort of conversion program to get the file into wave. When your 8125 is connected to the computer via USB go through Explore from the Active Sync screen, then through My Windows Mobile-Based Device, Application Date, Sounds and just drag and drop the wave files in there. they will all show up in you list of ring tones on your phone.
just tried this, adding both to the sounds folder AND the rings folder and the mp3s show up on the list but will not save as ringers. I'm totally lost... can someone help?
Under app data - sounds? I found that after uploading I had to turn the device on and off (detach from the usb to active sync first), then the music showed up under the options for incomeing calls. Some showed up immediately, some only after turning on and off. And they showed up only as ring options for incoming calls, nothing else.
Just tried this and they still aren't working... Also, for any music mp3 files that I have, when I click-hold on them, "set as ringtone" isn't even an option.
Go to settings, sounds and notifications, select tab (at bottom of screen) for notifications, at event dialogue box select Phone:Incoming Call, at ring tone dialogue, scroll through to find the mp3 you've uploaded.
That wasn't the problem. As I mentioned earlier, I know where to put the files and how to set them as a ringtone, they just wouldn't work and they wouldn't play in Windows Media Player either. I took my phone in to Cingular and the guy did a hard reset and now my mp3s are working just fine.
Sigh... hard resets are sometimes the only way to go. Also just to note, MP3s will only work for ringtones. You'll need to have WAV formatted sounds for notifications and such.
Hey All! I am a first timer here and yes I need help.
I am from India and just recently bought Cingular 8125 during my trip to NYC.
Previously I have used Dell Axim 30 and have a little bit knowledge of Pocket PC however there are certain which are much different in 8125.
So here is my list of worries, see if you can help.
1. My Storage Memory is 15 MB and Program Memory is 19 MB. Is this good enough for my 8125 to work at a good speed?
2. How can I view images stored on my SD card directly from Pictures & Videos program on 8125? And similarly themes stored on SD card are not picked up by Today program.
3. How can I move Internet Explorer on to my SD card? I tried manually thru Active Sync but it gave a error that it cannot be moved since its on ROM.
Lastly...
4. When I un-install a program inspite of deleting all the files I am still left with a black icon in the Program Folder on 8125 and I just cant get ridd-off it. This is really annoying.
Will be waiting for your replies.
Thanks,
Sakshi
3. Is it possible to have animated themes work on 8125?

Sounds good to me. I notice that things start to slow down when storage memory goes below 10 mb. But thats just me.

From Pictures and Video, it should say the name of the folder you are currently in in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Click there, and one of the available options to browse to should be "Storage Card". From there, browse to whatever folder your pics are stored.
Make sure your themes are in .tsk format. They should load automatically considering your phone searches for all files in .tsk format, rather than looking for themes in a particular folder.
3. How can I move Internet Explorer on to my SD card? I tried manually thru Active Sync but it gave a error that it cannot be moved since its on ROM.
dunno if you can do that, but i wouldnt doubt it.

So when you say you've deleted the files, do u mean you've gone to Start>Settings>System Tab>Remove Programs and removed the prog from there? Also, are you trying to remove programs that were already installed on your phone when u got it or programs that you've downloaded?
3. Is it possible to have animated themes work on 8125?
Has anyone had problems with thier storage cards corrupting files? I have a sandisk 1gb mini sd and have had some problems with it. I am unable to determine if it is phone related or if I have a defective card. The My Documents and Program Files folders were corrupted and renamed to a bunch of random letters and ascii characters. I am unable to delete these folders because WM5 reports that they can not be found. I have had some minor problems before with loosing the icons to shortcuts. When I would click on them, the program would still load (all files are on my storage card) but the icon would be gone. I could just pull the card and put it back in and the icons would come back.
I did a hard reset last night and so far so good, but I am still unable to delete what once was my programs and my documents.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestion for deleting those two folders?

Thanks!!
