Thinking about going Windows Mobile

Hey everyone! *waves*

Well who would’ve thought that I’d give up on not only Palm (happened two years ago), but eventually also my favorite cell-phone operative system: Symbian

Yes, I’m a little sick
of my Nokia N73 and has been looking for a new hybrid between cell-phone and PDA, but this time I’m really interested in the ”real thing”, which to me are PDA-phones such as the ones that Ipaq and Qtek manufactures. This means that I’m now leaning very much towards getting a device that has Windows Mobile as an OS, and thus I have come here for advice after Googling for a "Pocket PC forum"

So, what am I looking for exactly? Well the thing about my N73 which irritates me the most is how darn slow it’s starting to feel! I purchased it in August last year at which point I didn’t have any problem whatsoever with the device and thought that it was a major improvement over my Nokia 6681. But it feels as if the phone’s performance has been gradually dropping ever since despite regular firmware upgrades and cleansing the memory (both internally and the memory card) and now - going from sleep mode to active mode when unlocking the keyboard takes several seconds, as does launching the camera or opening messages (it’s always felt a tad slow I’ll admit that, but this is just ridiculous!)

Anyway, apart from wishing that my future PPC-phone will run and open applications just as smooth as my old Zodiac 2 did (ah the memories), my other requirements are as follows:

* At least a 2 megapixel camera, preferably one which has autofocus and a real flash
* The OS should be able to run The Quest, Enslaved, and Orion: Legend of Wizards (or at least two of them)
* There is no need for built-in WIFI or GPS as I’d rather use my Tablet PC for surfing the web while at a hotspot, but if I would have to choose between either then I’d pick GPS
* Same goes for a built-in keyboard - it doesn’t really matter, I’m more concerned about the price going up due to extra features such as these (though this one would be most convenient and preferred feature out of the three)
* 3G would be much appreciated since that’s the type of SIM card I’m using

Lastly, mention both existing and upcoming devices! I guess I’m not in a rush but would still like to make the change this summer, so anything coming out after that would probably make me feel restless and impatient. Unless it’s some super-phone with a 4.0 megapixel camera

Thanks everyone

Anyone? :/ Were my demands too high, my post too long, or are you perhaps just not "competent" enough to give me a good advice or two (not being rude here, simply wondering if I've come to the right place or not)? Any other forum(s) that you could recommend?

I wish I could just rent/loan a device and see for myself what the OS is like.

Only new to the forum but I'm more than happy to give your post a go.

Maybe the reason you haven't received a response to date is if you take a look through some of the posts on the site are civil, and as it serves members from all over the world there may be somebody in a different time zone to answer your question, so comments like "or are you perhaps just not "competent" enough to give me a proper advice or two?" are not worthy of a suitable response in some peoples eyes. Civility goes a long way.

I know myself I will go and research an answer before I post it and many people are probably the same. If you want an immediate answer, go and speak with the "competent" sales assistant at your local store, and don't bother trying to insult people here please. If you're willing to wait, "I’m not in a rush but would still like to make the change this summer" then perhaps you may receive a decent answer when there are other people trying to get "bricked" devices going as their only PDA/Phone.

As for your original request there are a couple of option you have. Just so you understand references the Qtek phones that you have seen are actually manufactured by a Thailand comany called HTC (High Tech Computer Corp.) and rebranded by a number of companies including Qtek, Imate, Cingular, O2, Orange, etc under different model numbers/name for each brand.

Firstly decide whether you need a touchscreen. Smartphones don't have touch screen features, like your Nokia Symbian OS, however Pocket PC do have a touchscreen. Both run WM OS.

To try and find all your demands in one device you will have to commence your own manufacturing company (I am open to correction if somebody can think of a device). Rather than trying to explain a number of devices to you and having an extremely large post, I think the GSMArena website would be good for you. Most telco's use this site also - GSMArena.com - GSM reviews, opinions, votes, manuals, ringtones and more... On the bottom of the menu on the left side is a phone finder which allows you to select multiple needs/desires to find a phone which meets your requirements.

Another thing which may be helpful to you as a previous Palm users if you still have programs you liked are applications like POSE (Palm Operating System Emulator) and Styletap which are Palm OS emulators. If you want your programs to run smoothly, this can be done by most devices depending on the program/processor, however I would recommend something like a HTC Hermes with a 400MHz processor which will definitely meet your needs.

As a final comment I would request on behalf of all members of the forum, please remember we are all busy in our own lives, and unless your request is urgent, we'll try and get the best answer with some info for you look over. If it's urgent I'm sure our moderators and senior members will help ASAP.

Thank you for replying, tack9204! And I apologize if my previous post came out as an insult because I certainly didn't mean it that way. Probably should've chosen a better word than "competent" but that is also why I used quotation marks. As a Swed I simply couldn't think of a better word (knowledgeable perhaps?) and the reason to why I questioned you all in the first place was because while I do understand that living your life is more important than answering a bunch of questions that some newcomer has, I also feel that when a thread gets close to having 100 views but still no answers then something must be wrong with either the thread itself or the forum which could be either dead, its members not very active, or the poster is simply getting ignored.
Now because I've seen plenty of activity in other threads - that makes me feel ignored... because I'm certainly not expecting someone to write an in-depth article on which phone I should pick up and why just because I myself took the time to write more than just "I wanna go Windows Mobile, what should I get?!?!", but a simple recommendation of a reliable brand is good enough to get things starting ("I've been using X for years now and couldn't be happier! And you should stay out of X because they tend to break easily").

Anyhow, I thank you for the URL you provided me with! I've been looking for a phone finder such as that one and it goes really well with the PDA Comparer @ PDAdb.net Now I can get a good overview of current and upcoming models which meet my requirements.
And I've already stated that a touchscreen is a must have feature for me. POSE seems like a good thing to have!

In reference to your number of views, also consider that there are a number of "guests" to the site which may be considering the same thing as yourself and they will also be recorded to my understanding, and as they can't post this would appear as if more members are "ignoring" you. (Please correct me if I'm wrong Dale, or any other moderator/senior member) These guests are probably similar to yourself, or maybe from other sites, and if they do see comments of members bickering it wouldn't be helpful to atracting members and increasing our numbers to make the knowledge base stronger.

I'm glad the info was helpful to you and appologise for missing the extra thread about the touchscreen. There are a number of sites which give reviews on the latest devices which are coming up, including this site in the News room referring you to those sites.

Good luck with your search for a device. Hope it serves you well. You always have the options of a Palm device running WM OS, however the camera wouldn't come up to standard of your specs unless they have changed.

The HTC Kaiser is also coming out in the next fews months with a 3MB camera, which is somewhere around, if not, the highest that I am aware of if you use your camera regularly. Dale Ahn has posted a link to review in the news pages. http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forums...ghlight=kaiser

True that, many of this thread's viewers have probably been anonymous guests who have the same questions in mind as I...

The HTC Kaiser looks like a perfect match for me! So I thank you for the heads-up and will eagerly be awaiting reviews and a price tag. Until then I've just managed to pick up a brand new Cingular 8125 for only $209 after following the advice Offspring gave in a previous thread (that's a good price, right?)! Should be able to get back most of that money once I sell it if I try not to use the phone more than necessary - to get a feel for how Windows Mobile devices operates.

ConraDargo:
I just read the thread, and my only comment is that Windows Mobile is not as fast as a desktop... and your main complaint about the N73 was that it was getting slow.
I have the TMobile MDA, similar to the 8125, and I often think back to the speed (but not the flexibility) of my old Treo... REmember to be careful with memory management, and get at least a 1 gig card for your pictures, music, and special programs...

Good luck!

Manny

That is a great price for the 8125 and I would thoroughly recommend that you heed the advice by manperez about memory management. I have the K-Jam as stated before and if you load up too much on the main memory it WILL be slow as I made the mistake when I first got mine. If you are confident enough to muck around with registry editing, XDA Developers website has numerous tips on speeding up th eHTC Wizard (which is the base for both of our phones) and there are numerous other things to do with your device as well.

Do a search for pocket PC programs with your internet and you will find literaly thousands of programs out there which you probably have already used on the Palm in a version for the PPC OC, or programs which do similar anyway. I use Pocketgear a lot to get the idea on what's around for an example.

Have fun with the PPC OC and if you get your hands on a Kaiser I want to see a great post, because I'm waiting for one also.
