Toshiba E740

I have just recieved a Toshiba E740 it does not have a battery but I have the ac adapter for it. I pluged in the adapter and turned it on but all that happens is the power light comes on. The screen stays off. Do you need a battery for it to work even though it is pluged in. 8)

Welcome to the forums sniper-ron! Based on the manual (which you can find here http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/...e740-na-en.zip). To turn on your e740 It looks like you need to have the Battery Pack Lock in the on position, and for this to happen you have to have a battery. Hope this helps!

E740 power

Hi Tim thaks for the manual. I got a battery followed the instructions to charge it. When it was all charged up I tried to power it up but nothing happened. the battery switch on the bottom is in the on position. Also the battery loch switch is in the lock position. The battery is a brand new Toshiba high capacity. Any thoughts?. Is there a service manual out.

Unfortunately it was hard enough to find the user manual online for this device so I'm not sure where to get a service manual :? . When you put the battery in do any indicator lights turn on? If so what are they? I really hope that your PDA isn't completely dead! Let us know!

indicator lights

This may be a little long winded. Here goes. I bought the Pda on E-Bay. It came with nothing but is new (has a stickers and labels attached). When the battery in in there are no indicator lights. The only time there are lights are when it is plugged in to charge. What I have noticed is the battery will not stay locked in even though the lock switch is in the lock position. I'm thinking the original owner did not have the battery fully seated before using the lock switch and forced it to the lock position. Thus damaging it. I have noticed the two little square pins that I assume pop out to keep the battery inplace stay inside. I figure that this is also a type of power switch as well because it has to be engaged for the unit to work. That is why I'm asking for a survice manual so I can properly take the PDA apart to check the locking switch to see it any part of it has been damaged. If you have some instructions on the disassembly of the umit it would be helpful. Again thanks for any and all your help so far.

It may be long winded but not for us addicts. Lucky for you we have a Toshiba e740 on hand so to get us on the same page I have included pictures of the battery setup so that you can compare it with yours. Let me know if you see anything different than our unit:

Here are what the battery contacts look like on our e740.

Another view of the battery contacts.

Here is what the battery tabs look like when in the unlocked position.

Here is the battery switch in the locked position.

And just in to be sure here is what the bottom of the e740 looks like with all switches in the "on" position and the unit active.
Let me know if you want to see another view of our unit! Hopefully this will help you in some way!

Good news I got it working. One of the power posts that contact the battery was loose on the circut board. Every time I installed the battery it would disconnect. All I had to do was solder it in place and ta da it powwered up. Thanks for all your help. So if anyone has this same problem check the contact pins that touch the battery. Thanks again.

Great to hear that it is finally working, sorry that I couldn't be of specific assistance, but I was happy to just be there to "hold you hand" through this. Let us know of your experiences with your new E740!
