Imagine having access to a 20, 40 or 80GB hard drive from your Pocket PC, allowing you to store any or all MP3s you'll ever own, all the movies you want and to have a backup drive on the road that lets you backup your Pocket PC to an actual hard drive? Well, according to an article at news.com if Maxtor and Linksys have their way, they will have a $99 device that will allow an external hard drive to be available to devices via a WiFi Connection! What a great idea! "Bob O'Donnell, analyst at research firm IDC, said the technology seems like a miniature version of so-called network-attached storage, which refers to specialized computers that serve up files over networks and are typically found in larger companies. "It's bringing network-attached storage down from the high end of the enterprise to the small office and home," he said. "It's just a logical extension."
Products to store data and zap it around homes are proliferating as companies try to help consumers manage the digitalization of entertainment. The devices include the Mirra "Personal Server" and a new product from Apple Computer that acts as both a portable wireless base station and a way to stream music throughout the home."
The first thought that comes to my mind is that when on vacation or on a trip, I always have to "choose" what I load onto my PPC before I leave. Since my storage cards DO offer superior storage to the storage of years ago, I can fit quite a bit, however, it's usually not enough content to "cover me" for a whole trip. The idea that I could pack a hard drive with one of these WiFi gadgets to load and unload content at will, is very enticing indeed. What do you think?
