Intel, Startup Codevelop Advanced Battery Tech
In what is supposed to double the amount of energy and life of a normal laptop or Pocket PC battery, a new Zinc Oxide battery being worked on by Intel and Startup Zinc Matrix Power, will hit stores sometime in 2006. The new Zinc Oxide batteries are supposed to be safer than Lithium-ION batteries and reduce the "memory effect" that occurs when you "Top off" your batteries by charging them when they aren't completely discharged. "Although zinc oxide is said to be safer than lithium-ion cells, the technology is prone to two problems: as the zinc oxide cell discharges, the oxide dissolves in the electrolyte and disperses throughout the battery. Recharging the battery requires the zinc oxide to reform itself in a set pattern for the battery to perform consistently.
Upon recharging, the zinc will react with water inside the battery, forming oxygen and hydrogen, the latter of which will consume the water inside the electrolyte, reducing the battery's ability to recharge over time. ZMP developed special polymers to prevent this, according to the company, which lock the zinc and zinc oxide inside a specially designed matrix -- the basis for the company's name.
The agreement between Intel and ZMP took a full year to nail down, according to Zeiler. ZMP owns most of the intellectual property, but the two sides will develop some joint IP, he added. ZMP's next step is to sit down with Intel's Centrino engineers, figure out their requirements, and work toward meeting them, Zeiler said. Meanwhile, the Centrino designers will work toward implementing the ZMP recharging scheme inside of its controller logic."
Anybody know what the WiFi enabled Casio 2500 PDA they reference in the article is? Never heard of it...

So. . . Once we are ready to dispose of these batteries, we can just pop the top off and use the contents to stop the itch! Genius! No more batteries in the landfills.
