Death of a screen...

Well, I've finally done it.. I dropped my ppc and killed the screen. Its not visibally broken (no cracks), but no image or nothing appears on the screen. I get a slightly green color overall, and once in a while, lines appear vertically on the screen. Other than that, the screen appears to be toast, tho the backlight is functioning.
Obviously I can't be 100% certain if the rest of the device is working, tho I did get alarm/appointment notification sound for when I had a reminder set.
Its a Ipaq 3850.... or rather was Any advice on hardware repairs? or if that's really an option at this point?

I believe you can still send it back to HP to have the screen replaced. It runs $125 or so to do it.
PPCtechs may have some of those screens lying around too. I'd check there too.

You could use it as the perfect excuse for a new PPC!

I'd check out PPC Techs....but at $125 ...you should look into replacing it with one of those Ipaq 1945s that have been going for $175 dollars lately.

jkendrick, you read my mind Currently I'm looking at the Samsung i700 as a replacement. Its a cell phone, ppc, camera all in one. 300Mhz, 64 ram, sdio. Not a bad little gadget all in all, and my financial manager (ie, girlfriend) proposed the idea of it! Of course, I think that's a tactic to stop me from looking at another new cell phone in a couple of months.

yeah! I'm in sort of a similar predicament. My desktop monitor is going out and I could pay $100 to have it repaired or I could use that $100 towards a new flatscreen LCD. I've been putting off ordering the LCD, settling instead for hitting this monitor to make it behave. I suppose I'll wait until this one doesn't come on again before I order. :?

This is the REAL reason I'm against convergent devices. Do you really want to only buy ONE thing once in a while? Only ONE new gadget?
I didn't think so.

Brad, if your desktop monitor is a CRT then be aware that LCD screens are so much easier on the eyes with extended use. I spent years with intermittent headaches and neck aches that disappeared when I went totally LCD.

kendrick makes a point In any case, I'm now deciding between the Toshiba e805, and the Samsung i700. I already have a couple compact flash cards (512,64) which the Toshiba would accommidate.
bk, do you have any opinions? how is the e805?

How did I miss this post? Do I have any opinions?.....do I have any opinions?......Why, I'm glad you asked.
Actually, I would normally say.....The Toshiba is the best darn device I've ever owned.....but in the last two days, I've been reading this thread over at Brighthand that is saying that Toshiba is getting out of the PPC business...
I would wait a little more time before making a decision....besides, if I was leaning towards an all in one device.....I would wait for the Mpx to hit...I would save my lunch money, search underneath the cushions, go through everyone's winter coats ....ahhh...you get the idea.....
Also, the Ipaq 6300 is coming out soon....and besides.....when I was trying to decide whether to get the Toshiba or an Ipaq 4150....Brad helped me to decide that what is cool....is to get a device that has something exciting...not just another PPC that does the same thing as the old one (just faster).....that's the reason I chose the Toshiba....and as I am still playing around with my new GPS and mapopolis (and soon to recieve that beta software of iGolfGPS), I'm glad I purchased the Toshiba...
I really, really, really hope they come out with an e830 and stay in the market....
