"Eye Popping" Earphones for Portable Devices

Wired Magazine has an article titled Change Your Input, Get an Earful that discusses these new high output E3c earphones from Shure. They are different from normal earbud style earphones because you actually insert them into your ear canal. The resulting sound is supposed to be "Eye Popping" according to the mini-review.
The price tag is a bit hefty though. They retail for $180.
"The sound pumped out by the E3c is so clear and detailed, it reveals quite clearly how badly a lot of MP3 files are encoded, which isn't apparent with standard iPod earbuds, nor with a pair of good-quality headphones.
Unlike standard earbuds, the Shure earphones don't sit in the ear. Instead, they are inserted inside the ear canal, and are sometimes known as "canal phones."

What do you think? Would you switch to "Canal Phones?"

My finger wouldn't fit.

How could I get my little finger in there if earphones are in the way?
Actually, I can't stand to have anything in my ears so I will stick with my Bose Noise Cancelling headphones.

Besides the pricetag, here's my main concern: "it reveals quite clearly how badly a lot of MP3 files are encoded"
My Sennheiser MX500's provide good sound and I don't hear any MP3 encoding issues. Is ignorance bliss or what?

I think I'd have to pass on these as well, besides my existing balance problem (I tip over for no reason! ) I will typically re-code my mp3's into wma with lower settings to get more tunes. Occasioanlly you can notice the difference, but for the most part, its fine. If these are as good as they claim, I'd be shafted

I heart my Sony Fontopia earbuds! Comfortable, noise blocking, and great sound.

I have a pair of Sony Noise Cancelling phones too, but they hurt my ears. Something about those "plug" type inserts tend to hurt after about a 1/2 hour or so.

They're so good, they make your files sound bad?
So my mp3's would sound better with worse earphones and that's supposed to be an incentive to me to spend 180 bucks on these things.
I don't think so...

Hah! This is good . . . I was looking at these online just the other day. I need some phones for the Dell so I can listen at the gym.
I have the Sennheisers as well, but they hurt my ears. I can't really even get them in well. My ears are small, and I need some good in-ears that will fit.
The price did shock me a bit, but then again, I am used to seeing guys with $10,000 in headphone setups. But not portable ones.
