Greetings! First time poster here. I've been reading around the forum, but haven't been able to find the answer to this question.
I have a new Cingular 8125. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router at home, splitting a DSL connection to one laptop and one desktop computer via ethernet.
We are using WEP for security, though we have had to keep the SSID on broadcast because my wife's thinkpad struggles to connect without the broadcast.
I tried my 8125 last night at home, and one of my major reasons for the purpose was wi-fi usage. I could not get it to recognize the WEP key after trying to enter it 3-4 times, using different passphrases and key numbers (1-4).
So I went back to the router and shut off WEP. The 8125 connected quickly and beautifully. I surfed websites easily with IE.
A few other tidbits:
1. Checked the router firmware- I have the latest version.
2. One of my other safety strategies was only allowing 2 DCHP clients at a time. I moved that up to 4, so that's taken care of.
3. When I turn on the phone I get OS 2.25.11.1 in red over the Cingular logo - I assume this is the ROM version, but I'm not sure.
Would I have better luck switching to WPA than with WEP for connecting? Am I doing something wrong with the 8125?
That is the most current ROM and it sounds like you are doing everything right. To verify, you are entering the code not the pass phrase? And the whole code as many times it does not look like it "fits."
Good suggestion, but I was already doing that. However, suddenly, it works!
What's different? I'm not entirely sure, but two things that may have bearing.
1. Yesterday I installed MoDaCo to disable my GPRS connections. Today was the first time I tried connecting at home via MoDaCo.
2. Today, when I got my local wireless network identified, it simply asked for the network key only, not a screen full of information asking if my connection was open, shared, etc. I just put in the hexadecimal code for WEP Key 1 and it worked!
So, my suggestions are to get MoDaCo if you're like me and want free wireless access via the 8125 but don't want to shell out for a Cingular data plan. Then, wait for networks to be discovered to enter the WEP key, rather than going into the Wi-Fi settings.
This is all of course, a little unscientific, but I'm struggling to figure out what I did that was all that earthshaking other than installing MoDaCo.
