I've never owned a pocket pc but I'm strongly drawn to buy one now. My problem is I can't find anywhere in my area where I can see one working in the flesh so to speak, so I'm looking initially for some opinions. I'm in the UK but travel to the US a couple of times a year. I thought a pocket pc might suit my needs better on these trips rather than my laptop but I want to know how well. I don't particularly need to casually surf the web, but I would like to check my emails and a couple of forums I visit, using open access points motels usually have (I understand the potential dangers of this). I would also like to use the device to watch a movie or two while on the plane. Satnav would be cool too but not totally necessary. I'm thinking that one where I could buy, charge and carry an extra battery, and stick a movie or three on a couple of SD cards, to watch while I'm flying would be good I've been researching and come up with the following models as maybe serving my needs, the HP iPaq rx 5935 and the Fujitsu Siemens - Pocket LOOX 720. Does anyone have experience of these two, or even a recommendation as to another that will serve my needs? I have a budget of £500 ($1000 at todays exchange rate). Any input appreciated.
I can't give you any specific help on those models but what I would say is look for a device that uses CF cards as well as SD because, in theory, most new devices can cope with almost unlimited CF sizes but equally most devices can only really cope with 4Gb maximum on SD and even that can be a struggle. SDHC will change that but that doesn't affect me so I know little about it.
I have an iPAQ hx2490 with a 2Gb SD and an 8Gb Cf and can comfortably do everything you are asking for so if it was me I'd say look for an iPAQ but then I might be biased.
As regards seeing one working I agree with you. I find it is becoming increasingly difficult in the UK to find PDA's on sale anywhere other then in the likes of the Comet/Curry's/PC World monopoly, sorry conglomerate, sorry thieves!
