This has probably been identified somewhere in here, but, I can't find it. I used to have a iPaq phone that worked great as a phone. But, it died a painful death and I decided to try a Cingular 8525. In browsing around, I have now found others who have the same call dropping issue as I have. Evidently, the issue stems from a sub par antenna.
So, my question is simple... are there any sites out there that actually test PocketPCs for RF operation like receiver sensitivity, transmitting power and the like, and RATES the phone quality and performance? I would like to replace the 8525, but I would like some objective evidence that the phone operation is in the "GOOD" to "GREAT" category.
To be honest it is not a hardware issue in most cases, its the lack of people keeping up with upgrades. Ask your self when was the last time I upgraded my rom, when was the last time I upgraded my radio? I have an 8525 and have never had an issue since i upgraded the radio to 1.38.00 and that was over a year ago. Not only does upgrading the radio stack help cellphone quality but is nessisary to connect to 3g and edge networks. If you have a old hermes 100 that has never been upgraded then you cant even connect to the edge network for cingular. You will notice this by a G in your connection area at the top of the device. An E will indicate the edge network and H will indicate 3g.
Ok so what you need to do to upgrade your radio. First head over to are download section and pick up Olipro v7 2.10 this will keep you from getting any bad blocks. It is a real easy install just follow the directions, it will be install via a RUU installer. If you have ever updated your rom you will know what this is. Ok next for the radio it is a little tricky to tell you which one is going to work best for you area and service provider. The newest and what Im using is 1.51.00.10 you can download it below, it to uses the RUU installer so you will be familiar with that as you have already installed Olipro v7. I will post more radio stacks when I get home and have more access to them as Im at work right now...shhhh... Also you will notice better battery life as well. All good things when you stay ontop of your upgrades and please check this forum as I have posted about WM6 on the Hermes which is now official from AT&T.
